Very nice! I for myself got Obsidian forbidden to use in the Company cos i was not allowed to pay for it. Also not allowed to use it cos it has a commercial license. Now i can use it in the company and support Obsidian financially! More on reddit.com

The app looks great! And it's free for personal use. Now, imbedded with "if the product is free, YOU are the product" idea, I can't help but wonder: what's the catch? How will the app make money of me? Are there ads? Data collection? A subscription that is needed for proper, comfortable use of the app?
I just got the app and getting around it. So far so good. But if there is anything I ought to know, please tell me. I can't believe this proper note taking app is free, despite nothing suggesting otherwise.

I think it's worth differentiating between services and tools. Google Drive and Obsidian Sync are both services which require an internet connection to make use of. To provide those services, the companies have to pay for servers that have to be up all the time. Obsidian, on the other hand, is a tool that does not require external infrastructure to function. This is unusual nowadays but used to be the norm. Although Obsidian is not open source, open source software used to be a lot more popular as well back before the market moved to mobile devices which are substantially more locked down. I'm personally trying to reduce the number of services I rely on in my life and use more tools. I can trust that Obsidian (the app) won't disappear overnight, even though my notes would be fine if that did happen.
