So my account has been flagged for review by security and they're asking for a photo of me holding my ID. Has anyone encountered this problem using this website? I don't feel safe giving them a photo of my face and ID when i've already given them my bank infromation. For the record all I've done is made an account and I haven't been able to purchase anything.

Edit: Ok so I sent them the photo of me and my ID and nothing has happened so far and I was able to make my purchase so they seem pretty legit

2nd Edit (August 25, 2025): Still nothing has happened to my account. Pirateship seems to be legit

I've heard some users here talking about Pirate Ship, but the name makes me a bit uneasy. Can I purchase insurance through their website? I don't like Etsy's new global shipping program.

I've read several reviews on people saying it's good and multiple people saying it's bad because they charge you extra later on for various reasons I'm moving soon and shipping my PC setup is going to cost a arm and a leg with pirate ship prices so low I was considering it but I'm not sure if it's trust worthy. If it's not any other recommendations to have low shipping prices?

I sent a package contains $6800 worth of computers. UPS mangled the box. UPS has agreed to pay the claim, BUT pirateship.com just need to upload my documents since they are the ones that sold the label. They are refusing to do it for some reason and chat is the only way you can get ahold of them. They just keep giving me the same runaround stock answer. So I am out the money because of pirateship.com. They are cheap yes, but you get what you pay for apparently.

With my older car, I buy a lot of parts to make it nicer through guys in group chats that go to junkyards for me, they get the part, box it and I create a label for them.

I just used pirate ship for the first time, and for a 49x33x5 package weighing in at 6 pounds, through the UPS site I was quoted $102. Through pirate ship it’s $49 through UPS.

I was expecting no more than like a 6 percent discount but not 50% !?

How can this be ?

Yes, it is wild! I own a shipping store, and honestly, sites like Pirate Ship often get better pricing than I do at wholesale shipping rates. It doesn’t always make sense, but that’s the system we’re working in. The reason some people still choose to ship with us (even if it costs more) is because they value the service and peace of mind. We know how to pack things securely, and if something goes wrong, we’re the ones who go to bat with the carriers to get it resolved. I hear horror stories all the time from people who tried to deal with customer service through third-party resellers and couldn’t get anywhere. Funny enough, they’ll sometimes call us for help with labels they didn’t even buy from us. What’s even more interesting to think about is what happens after you print that 50% cheaper label. Most of the time, the package still gets brought to a small shipping store like mine for drop-off. We accept it, now at no cost to you, smile, and pass it on to the carrier. If we weren’t here, I do wonder what would happen to all those packages... Sure, there are a few drop boxes and carrier pickups, but for a lot of people, their “go-to plan” is still coming to us, without realizing that we are footing the bill to provide them with a free service. For now, I’m incredibly grateful for the customers who stick with us and trust us with their shipping needs, even if it costs a little more. Time will tell whether there are enough of them to keep local stores alive, or if independent shops like mine go the way of Blockbuster while shipping moves entirely to online platforms.

There are multiple reasons for this, some of which are covered by another commentor. When you go to the UPS store (or in person to the post office), part of what you're paying for is the overhead of them basically holding your hand and walking you through the process of shipping something. You are charged full retail rate for this. When you buy online through a service like Pirateship, you get access to Commercial Rates. In part, these rates are lower because they assume you're going to need less attention - youll print out your label, give the package to the shipper all properly boxed up and ready to go, and won't need a lot of hand holding.

r/sailing on Reddit: Are pirates a real threat?

I saw a Facebook reel where someone claimed there were pirates approaching their vessel. The video they took didnt show anything and they didnt really explain what happened other than pirates approached us. They were off the coast of Venezuela. Is that a big concern? I figured certain areas in the world like Indonesia or Somalia are known for it but is it a threat to small sailing vessels? Anyone have any stories?
