Is Reddit a safe site to visit?
Generally, Reddit is safe, but like many large social platforms, it depends on how you use it. The site itself isn’t inherently dangerous, and it doesn’t install anything on your device just by visiting.  However, because Reddit is built around user-generated content, some posts, links, or communities may expose you to scams, misinformation, or inappropriate material. Overall, platform trust depends on how carefully you use Reddit and which communities you engage with.

r/TheoryOfReddit on Reddit: Reddit Is Terrible for You
September 2, 2023 -

Reddit is one of the worst form of social media. Let me explain why.

Firstly, when browsing Reddit, you take in absurd amount of written data in form of opinions. This in itself causes information overload, which makes you more anxious and stressed. Secondly, the worst side effect in my view, is that information is not processed, you just take it in passively, like watching a TV; this alters your worldview, even subconsciously, and if there are hints of negativity(dating is impossible nowadays, I will be forever alone, The economy is bad, The world is getting worse etc...), they will be amplified by supporting evidence, which you will seek thanks to confirmation bias. You will start to see world in weird ways, that doesn't not represent how the world works for your.

Also, it is easy to trick yourself into thinking the information is something worth taking it: "I learn new stuff", "It is sophisticated converstion"- unlike, let's say, compared to TikTok. However, the information is not processed, and will just fade away, just like your plain ol' TikToks, only leaving you with a feeling that you spent your time in more efficient way than TikTok, but without anything concrete, than hours dissapeared from your precious day.

The upvote system is something that seems quite nice: quick way to read the most accurate information!

Well, actually upvoting and reading just the top posts just promotes conformism. The top rated posts create feeling that they are the right opinion and view, whilst actually they are just the most popular ones. Treating the most popular view as the most truthful view is the definition of conformism, and the conformism is the definition of not thinking for yourself, and not thinking for yourself is a sure way to live a life that is not aligned with how you truly want to live. Is that something you want for YOUR life? For me, the answer is clear-cut no.

I do realize, that there are healthy ways to use Reddit - as there are healthy ways to use any form of social media. Healthy use of social media is seldom and I think Reddit is no difference. Mindless scrolling and reading the text here quickly, will be detrimental for your character and metal health, while posting your own thoughtful posts and responses can very well be a great way to spend time.

And yes, this is written as motivation for me to stop using Reddit, as I've come to see how it harms my mental health, by altering my view of the real world. And I don't think I am the only one suffering from this. Thank you.

r/TheoryOfReddit on Reddit: I'm starting to view reddit as harmful
August 27, 2022 -

My step daughter has been bad from playing roblox because it brings out the worst in her. Now tho I wonder what can be said about me and reddit.

I deleted Facebook years ago and never looked back because I felt it was causing me harm. Now I'm seeing the same trend on here.

I'm constantly checking for new notifications all the time.

Its's the first thing I check in the morning.

Sometimes It actually affects my state of mind and I come away with frustration because I've not got the feedback I wanted from a post.

I'm right now ignoring my Mrs and have been for the last couple of hours because I've been stuck arguing on here. I've had stuff to do but now I have no time.

I am someone who gets easily addicted to social media. I ain't got at moderating myself. Reddit tho for its bad points also is very helpful when it comes to certain topics. I have had very good info from certain subreddits and If I delete reddit then I will lose a valuable source of knowledge. Hmm how can I be on here and stay sane?

Is Reddit Safe? The Uses and Risks of Reddit
August 2, 2023 - With such a large platform, content on Reddit is essentially limitless. Unfortunately, that means that it’s not difficult to come across harmful content like pornography, graphic violence, and profanity. Reddit requires users to be at least 13 years old in order to make an account; however, beyond clicking a button, there is nothing to deter a child from lying about their age to access Reddit.

r/kansascity on Reddit: Is East side of kansas city dangerous?
September 2, 2021 -

I'm new to kansas city and stay nearby plaza, its only been few weeks but I have observed that west side neighborhoods are kinda upscale and the east side neighborhoods(that I have seen till now like troost) are not so upscale.

I have been to the east side few times and never felt unsafe but I kinda felt that neighborhoods to the west and east of the plaza are quite different. I'm sorry if I offended anyone,I just want to know if there's any particular reason for this difference.

PS: If anyone can tell me if there any neighborhoods that i need to be careful in the night ,it will be really helpful

The east side of the city is more socioeconomically disadvantaged than the west side of the city, and the practice of redlining (which was already mentioned) is the primary reason why, and it's no coincidence either that the neighborhoods on the east side are overwhelmingly populated by Black families, and unfortunately also the most impacted by crime and violence due to poverty. KC is slowly trying to atone for the racist segregation practices of the past by investing more into commercial and residential redevelopment, but with that also come accusations of gentrification. It's a tough situation to rectify, but at least more people are becoming aware of it. With all that being said, there are some great places east of Troost toward I-435 if you know where to look. Blue Parkway/MLK Blvd. is the big east-west corridor through there south of I-70, there are great restaurants up and down Prospect Avenue, Swope Park, the Kansas City Zoo, Starlight Theatre -- all call the east side home. Check em out when you have a chance. As far as being careful at night, just use common sense and trust your gut. Anyplace can be dangerous under the right circumstances -- even the Plaza, but in general, I think it's easy for most people to know when they're in a safe setting and when they're not.

Generally yes, eastern Kansas City tends to have more poverty and crime. Although Kansas City, Kansas is west and has relatively high poverty and crime rates as well. The dividing line historically was infamous Troost Avenue, although it’s been moving further East and is now more like 71. That being said other areas see crime as well. Westport has gotten a more notorious reputation in recent years specifically late at night.
