Is Reddit safe? How to protect yourself and stay private
May 12, 2025 - No, in our opinion, Reddit is not safe for kids. Designed for adults, the platform allows anonymous interactions, making age verification very difficult. As a result, children can be easily exposed to inappropriate content or potential manipulation.
People also ask

Is Reddit safe for children?
No, Reddit isn’t safe for children. Even though the site sets a minimum age of 13, there’s no real age verification, so younger kids can easily access it. Some content on Reddit can be explicit, inappropriate, or even harmful, and moderation depends on the community, which means rules aren’t always consistently enforced. Parental controls are limited, so without third-party tools or close supervision, it’s not a platform most parents would consider kid-friendly.

Is Reddit a safe site to visit?
Generally, Reddit is safe, but like many large social platforms, it depends on how you use it. The site itself isn’t inherently dangerous, and it doesn’t install anything on your device just by visiting.  However, because Reddit is built around user-generated content, some posts, links, or communities may expose you to scams, misinformation, or inappropriate material. Overall, platform trust depends on how carefully you use Reddit and which communities you engage with.

March 30, 2024 -

Is there some specific criteria, because it seems highly subjective for many types of content.

Case in point, plenty of conservatives would argue that a man crossdressing is inappropriate for minors to view. Yet not all crossdressing subreddits are marked as 18+, despite the fact that some people might find it disturbing and want it filtered as adult material. So how does Reddit even determine what must be tagged "not safe for work" with regards to enforcing the TOS?

it seems like not putting out super identifying information is the best, unless a throwaway account is used? That's probably true, however the thing about super revealing information is that nobody actually knows if it's real or not. I could say my country, state, and city, but there's no guarantee that's true. I could say I'm married, but nobody knows if that's true. Strangers likely aren't going to take a deep dive through your profile unless you explicitly give them reason to. On Reddit, people usually don't care because everyone's pretty anonymous and there's no incentive to try and change that. I live In a small town and worry that people will end up finding my posts as everyone knows everyone else! That's a valid concern, maybe they could figure it out. But if you live in a small town, the odds of someone discovering you are also very slim. They'd have to live there too. My suggestion is just be careful of what you say. No need to lie. Although you could also make jokes. Jokes usually aren't considered morally wrong if they're lies. The situations where you'd even have to reveal information are really up to you. Unless you're commenting with revealing information, or posting for that, you should be fine. I've rarely ever been asked to reveal personal information on Reddit. Posts that prompt that aren't really a thing, at least that I've come across.

If that is a worry, a second account is a great way to go. Let your friends and family know the "fluffy" account and save the deep stuff for the second. Many people have multiple accounts for different purposes. The drawback is you have to go through the new user growing pains more than once. Also it is just a good idea on the here to not give out much personal information anyway. I am in a small town, but I only ever state the region I am in. Don't identify landmarks that people could use to figure out where you live or anything like that. You are as safe and anonymous as you make yourself. Also, this is the internet, when it comes to your safety feel free to lie, a lot of others due to.
