Getting a virus from just browsing the internet is highly unlikely as long as you keep your browser and operating system up to date with security updates (most will update automatically, so you should be up to date unless you turned updates off). Getting one from a major website is even less likely because the hacker wont have full control over what gets delivered to victims (for example twitter may re-encode uploaded videos, changing the content) and because they tend to have better monitoring and control over what gets posted and have the ability to remove anything harmful more quickly
