Is it possible for anyone to track someone on Reddit? I was chatting with a guy there and he said that he can know my location through my IP address. - Quora
Answer (1 of 8): Not exactly. There are ways to get IP address, which involve sending those people a link to click, or keep them in a chat while you look up your netstat to see where your computer is connecting to. Assuming you succeed, you get their IP. Now, if you use any of the services avai...

r/AskTechnology on Reddit: How private is reddit?
November 8, 2013 -

Hey, so here's a question. How private is someone on reddit? Like, how hard would it be to find my public IP? I know a stalker can look at comment history for info. That's not what I mean. Can someone find out who my ISP is? Can they find out what area I live in? I'm just curious. I don't have any cause for alarm right now, but I'm wondering how much I should interact with others on reddit. I don't want it to seep into my real life, you know? And if I piss off the wrong redditor, can he track me down (other than looking at my post/comment history)?

Law enforcement could probably get reddit to divulge your apparent IP address. Tracking an IP to an address is not easy as many ISP rotate them

Your level of safety depends on the person you draw interest from. If you draw the interest of a government body and they intervene, asking Reddit to give them a realtime update on your current IP at the times you post, it wouldn't be hard to track you down. IPs only become hard to track after you're no longer using that IP, which requires your connection be refreshed. Using your phone? The phone company can easily track it back to you, and they have a history of doing whatever the gov'ts want. Using a broadband ISP? A bit harder, but only if time passes before they track the IP.

In terms of regular people, you're only as safe as your informational hygiene is solid. If you never give any indicators of who you really are, and don't use the same usernames as you do on other sites, the odds of it being tracked back to you are slim. But the danger is definitely in the username, email addresses, etc. Can someone get your IP directly from Reddit? Not very likely. Reddit doesn't expose the address you post from in the data of your comments, posts, etc. But if you use the same name on a forum somewhere a few times, then make the mistake of linking from a Reddit post to that forum, the odds skyrocket that someone can find you. Forums have notoriously bad security in some cases, and infiltrating one to ferret out your IP wouldn't be hard for someone with the right skills. All it would take is watching r/netsec or another relevant subreddit until an unpatched vulnerability, 0day exploit, etc, were to pop and wham, access to that forum. Therefore access to your IPs. And so on.

So yeah... you're only as safe as your weakest link.

In conclusion, while it is possible to determine your approximate location through your IP address, it is unlikely that someone you are in conflict with could use this information to trace your exact location.

October 15, 2022 -

Hello :)

If I want to open another Reddit account and switch it in the app, would someone easily be able to trace accounts and realise the other one I use is linked to this one?

Not a major thing, like I'm happy for FBI or cops to know if they really want to, nothing at all dodgy just for my professional and personal protection and safety from some redditors.

Thanks in advance.
