r/travel on Reddit: Planning a trip to San Francisco but worried about Safety!
March 16, 2024 -
Hello everyone,
As mentioned in the title my partner (27M) and I (25F) are planning a trip to San Francisco soonish!
However to say I have not heard horror stories is a lie. I have been warned evily of the crippling homelessnesd, drug issues and safety issues that tourists can face in the city.
I am not sure I understand fully if it is reasonable to worry?
I am now booking hotels and I want to make sure I am being careful about it but I do not really know what to expect. Any suggestions/advice/comments about your own trip to the city?
Any area I should notoriously avoid?
Thanks!!

Honestly, just avoid the Tenderloin neighborhood. The city actually feels great to me right now, much improved since the low point post-covid. The Tendy gets people in trouble all the time since it is right in the middle of the city, so walking directions can lead you through it, hotels look like a great deal/location, etc. Edit- And the only other thing is don’t leave anything in a rental car in the city. Very high likelihood of car break-ins. But keep in mind: SF has one of the lowest rates of violent crime for big cities in America! It’s generally property crime that is the issue, which sucks, but is much less “scary”.

San Francisco doesn’t even crack the top 50 cities in the US in terms of violent crime. Realistically, the most you will probably see are homeless people, and maybe encounter drug use and mental illness. If you ignore it, it is very unlikely it will affect you (except maybe make you sad). If you are renting a car I would give you the same advice I’d give for any city—don’t leave electronics or valuables in it overnight, and put any such valuables in the trunk if you’re parking it somewhere during the day. Other than that, have an amazing time! It’s such a fun city filled with incredible food and sites.

First time solo in a big city (SF) — how safe am I really?
First off, you're gonna be fine and have a good time. Secondly, I'd like to suggest you put away your conference badge(if you use one for the conference center) when walking on the streets. I've never understood why people leave those out lol. More on reddit.com
Is San Francisco a safe city to live in?
Thousands thrive here. Tech employees bike to work, chefs close restaurants past midnight, and students crowd late buses. They navigate risk with routine measures and choose housing in calmer neighborhoods when possible. Safety varies by budget and schedule, yet many long-term residents grow comfortable—and protective—of their blocks.

Is San Francisco safe for tourists now?
Yes, within limits. Violent crime against visitors remains uncommon. Petty theft shows up more often, especially near parked cars and crowded transit. Travelers who plan routes, keep valuables secure, and avoid isolated blocks late at night usually explore without incident.

Crime exists, and property offenses stand out. Yet the word “problem” depends on perspective. Residents who compare current rates with the early 1990s note large improvements.
