We were there ten years ago, and it was pretty grungy then - not unsafe or menacing as such - just lots of apparently homeless people milling about on the footpaths (sidewalks), with very little to occupy them. But there were lots of tourists (and locals) out and about pretty much all the time, and we felt fine wandering around in the evening - but we were usually back at our accomm by about 7:30 pm. It's an interesting city for the tourist, with lots to see and do during day-time - it just seems to have a lot of poor people as well. Lots of security screens and security staff.

Hello All, I'm visiting San Francisco July 2025, it will be my first visit there. I'll be there eight days, technically seven since my flight arrives late at night. I love the outdoors, parks, walks, hiking, nature and planned on renting a car to go to Muir Woods, Yosemite, and Sequoia National Parks since I'll have time. I'd also love to drive down the coast. I'm in Atlanta so I'm used to driving everywhere.😉 I'd love some tips on other things to do, favorite restaurants, weather tips, or anything insightful. I also planned to visit Alcatraz and a few touristy spots maybe the first day since I'm a huge Alcatraz fan lol😆.Thanks for your help.

In case you hadn't clocked it, Yosemite is a 4 hour drive away. Sequoia is also 4.5 hours away. I think it's like 3 hours between them. Plus they are huge parks so there's lots of driving inside them as well, and in July there will be significant traffic at least in Yosemite (don't know about Sequoia). I believe you when you say you're used to driving a lot, but you want to make sure you have plenty of time for the hiking and other activities - I'd say pick one of those parks, max. And if it were me, I'd just base myself in SF and do Muir Woods, SF stuff, and drive down the coast.

You will be in the car your entire trip. I would pick Yosemite, or Sequoia National Park, or Muir Woods and San Francisco. Yosemite is a 4-5 hour drive from San Francisco. Sequoia National Park is another 4-5 hours away from the city. Traffic is terrible, so it is easy to add a couple of hours on to those drives especially in the summer during peak tourist season. Muir Woods is about 20 minutes outside of San Francisco, and there are plenty of places to hike around Muir Woods in Marin County. There are plenty of things to do in the Bay Area that are only an 1-2 hour drive. Napa Valley, Sonoma, Marin Headlands, Point Reyes, if you want to drive on Highway One Pacifica and Half Moon Bay south of San Francisco are beautiful, but may be foggy that time of year. Plenty of places to hike with incredible view of the ocean. I know you are used to driving, but driving here is another story. It is not easy, and the freeways are different than they are back east or most of the country. They are not marked or designed well. In the city, you will have hills so steep at stop signs you cannot see if someone has stopped so you can go safely. Lots of one way streets, and parts of the city are on a grid and parts are not. You cannot leave anything in your car, and parking is impossible and expensive. I only bring this up since you mention you drive a lot in Atlanta. During your stay in San Francisco, I would wait until the day you leave the city to rent a car. Make sure to buy your tickets ahead of time for Alcatraz, it sometime sells out and I would do the night tour. July in the city is cold, 50-60 degrees with fog, so it is damp, sometimes you have a few warm days, but not many. It will be warner outside of San Francisco during the day, but it cools off at night. It is a dry heat. Summers on the coast are in the 80-90’s but the more inland you go the hotter it gets. It will easily be in the 90-100’s inland. As for food, that is a broad question. We have all types and price ranges. I would check out Japantown, North Beach, Fisherman’s Wharf there are plenty of places to eat in those parts of town and you can do touristy things in those neighborhoods too.
