Is San Francisco Safe? [Answered 2025]
Safety in San Francisco sits in a middle zone. It is not the most dangerous big city in the United States, yet it never feels as quiet as a small coastal town. Violent crime levels hover close to the average for large California metros.
Is San Francisco safe for tourists now?
Yes, within limits. Violent crime against visitors remains uncommon. Petty theft shows up more often, especially near parked cars and crowded transit. Travelers who plan routes, keep valuables secure, and avoid isolated blocks late at night usually explore without incident.

San Francisco Crime: is SF safe for tourists? Local's tips
Safe for cars, not so much. You can see on the maps above, it's not a hot spot for robbery. It is one of the most popular areas for car break-ins, unfortunately. See more about crime in Golden Gate Park and whether you should go there at night. Before you decide not to come here (!), remember that over 800,000 people live here, and that San Francisco had about 25 million visitors in 2018, so the numbers aren't as bad as they look.

r/sanfrancisco on Reddit: Moving to SF for a job, is living here safe?
September 20, 2023 -
I'm moving to San Francisco for my job. I'm in my early 20s and want to live in a happening place so I was planning to rent a coliving space in the Downtown/SoMa/Union Square. My prime consideration is general security concerns and homeless people in SF. Basically, is downtown SF a safe place it's definitely happening I think? By safe I mean can I walk in the street without any concerns of getting mugged, visit nearby cafes with my laptop without getting robbed, etc. This is my first time in the US so any opinions on this by the locals are highly appreciated.

Hah- that’s pretty much the most dead spots in the City that you could pick to live in. Look more towards neighborhood-y spots (and yeah, it’s generally safer too, depending on the neighborhood).
