I'm planning on starting an online business but I've read that Shopify has some SEO issues. I have no web developing skills so I'd really like to use Shopify if possible.
I'm debating whether I should hire someone to build my site from the ground up with optimization in mind.
OR build my own Shopify site and hire an SEO expert to work out whatever kinks there might be.
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have experience with setting up seo for my friend's website, it works perfectly, though I'd advise the use of plugins and such. I also make sure that the images are not over 1MB large. Always have the right amount of keywords in title, meta descriptions and copy. Google will punish over use of keywords, maybe that's why websites like AliExpress don't rank. Shopify works well with SEO you just need to find the right guy, I hope this helps :D

We switched from a custom Woocom to Shopify, and to be honest after the initial drop in SEO we're quickly moving back up to where we were before. Granted we have a strong brand, lots of PR and backlinks etc. but with an extra app for SEO and a well-coded theme I think Shopify is pretty solid for SEO especially if you don't have a dedicated employee/freelancer to manage it.
