2 weeks ago - Shortly after this, the United States and the national governments of the European Union expressed their support for "Taiwan" (none of them recognises the ROC) to have "meaningful participation" in UN specialized agencies, such as the World Health Organization. In May 2009, Taiwan's Department of Health was invited by the World Health Organization to attend the 62nd World Health Assembly as an observer under the name "Chinese Taipei". This was Taiwan's first participation in an event organized by a UN-affiliated agency since 1971. In 2009, Taiwan chose not to bring the issue of its participation in the UN up for debate at the General Assembly for the first time since it began the campaign in 1993.

For that you have to understand the history behind Taiwan. Taiwan is the remnants of the Republic of China, which took over after the monarchy was abolished in 1912. However the new republic proved extremely weak, and especially in the border regions local warlords and other factions quickly began to challenge the government in Nanjing. Civil war was the result. One of these factions were the communists led by Mao. The civil war raged from 1927-1936 and from 1946-1949 (the Japanese were responsible for that interlude), and in the end the communists won. The Remnants of the Republic fled to Taiwan, and when China aligned itself with the USSR and North Korea in the war up there the US were suddenly very interested in keeping the Republic alive. It created a situation were the west recognized Taiwan as China, and the communist states recognized the PROC as China. Yet when the Western-Chinese relations improved in the 1970s, the west relatively quickly stopped to recognize Taiwan as a state in order to not offend mainland China. More on reddit.com

September 15, 2023 - At its 26th session in October 1971, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758, which undertook "to restore all its rights to the People's Republic of China and to recognize the representatives of its Government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations, and to expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the United Nations and in all the organizations related to it". It also spelled out that China has one single seat in the UN, so there is no such thing as "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan".
