r/PersonalFinanceCanada on Reddit: Thinking of getting a tangerine credit card. Should I open an account with them to get access to the third category?

Currently have a Vancity Enviro visa and it's rewards options are not great. I want to start using my credit card for all my purchases and bills, and then just pay it off every payday. I've decided on the tangerine card (I think), and figured I'd just open an account with them and just let the monthly cash back grow in that account. While still staying with my current credit union because I like them and they don't charge me. Does this sound like a relatively simple, low hassle idea? Any drawbacks I should know of? I've been with my current bank account since I was 6 lol so I have no idea about opening up a second bank account.

There's no real downside. Tangerine does have an account inactivity fee if you let it sit for like 2 years but as long as you use that credit card it should keep the account active with cash back. The biggest downside of the tangerine saving account is that the only bill you can pay with it is the tangerine credit card. If you want to pay any other bill you'll also need to open a chequing account.

I day to day bank with TD because I've also been there since I was a kid but have many savings accounts with Tangerine. Free and super simple to open and their app and website are great to use. No downside to opening a second account and maybe you will find a use for it or maybe you'll keep your banking at the other bank no problem either way. In case you haven't considered this: don't cancel your old card. One of the things that contributes to your credit score is length of credit history. If you had this first credit card for many years and always paid it off (aka has positive history) then it will actually contribute positively to your credit score vs cancelling it and just using the new credit card. As long as obviously you aren't tempted to spend outside your means by having a second credit card. I wish I knew this as I had a CC with TD I got at 18 it had great history (barely used it and always paid off) but I cancelled it when I got a newer card cause I didn't think I needed it since I never used it. I've used a few different CCs since but once I learned that I have always kept my oldest card just so that it will show years of positive history. I don't even keep it in my wallet it sits in my dresser and I have one recurring charity donation on it that I pay each month. Do all my other day to day spending on a newer card with better rewards.

Update: I unfortunertly did not get approved for the Tangerine, but I was pre-approved for the TD cahs back visa, and I was approved for the simplii finacial card, thanks for everybobody's help

I'm 19, been working for 3 years now (full-time during summer/holidays and part-time during school) in fast food and made over 25k last year. I have one low rate visa card with a 3k limit which I've had for about a year. I use about $100-300 every month and ofc pay it back in full on time and have a credit score of 734. Should I apply or will I most likely not get approved and just save myself from getting a hard inquiry for no reason.

I currently have a CIBC smart account. I need another bank account to share with my wife and tangerine is the bank that is mostly recommended here. I have read forums and visited bank websites and I don't see much difference.

I also have a CIBC Visa infinite which gives 4% cash back on gas and groceries. Yes there is 80,000 annual spend limit, compared to unlimited cashback from Tangerine, but even their world mastercard is only 2%. I don't think I'll ever spend more than 80k a year and exceed that limit.

Should I just stick to CIBC and open a second account? or can you recommend another bank account like TD or Scotia bank?

Is there something that tangerine have that other banks don't?

Is there something that tangerine have that other banks don't? Tangerine and Simplii offer checking accounts that are full featured but have no fees or minimum balances at all. So you can write and cash cheques, send and receive eTransfers, withdraw and deposit cash for free at ABMs, get bank drafts, make debit purcahses, direct deposit/preauthorized debit, etc. with no minimum balances or transaction limits or fees of any kind. It's worth noting that Tangerine is a wholly owned subsidiary of Scotiabank, and Simplii is the direct banking division of CIBC. In any case, it can be difficult to get a no-fee checking account directly from a Big Bank without maintaining a minimum balance or it being tied to some other product you have at that bank. These accounts free you from those strings. I also have a CIBC Visa infinite which gives 4% cash back on gas and groceries. Yes there is 80,000 annual spend limit, compared to unlimited cashback from Tangerine, but even their world mastercard is only 2% Not really relevant if what you're after is a bank account. The credit card is a completely separate product. Just because you open a Tangerine (or Simplii) checking account doesn't mean you'd have to switch your credit card there. Lots of people maintain relationships with several banks simultaneously.

tangerine an Simple regularly recommended because they are free acocunts. Tangerine is an online bank so some folks need physical presence depending on their needs.d

r/PersonalFinanceCanada on Reddit: Should I Accept Tangerine's Credit Card Offer?
August 10, 2023 -

Hey everyone,

I recently received a pre-approval offer from Tangerine for their Mastercard, with a credit limit of up to $20K. I currently have two credit cards: one from Scotia with a $6K limit and another from TD with a $1K limit. I also have a line of credit from Scotia with a $20K limit. I’m generally good about paying off my bills on time.

I'm trying to figure out if there's any real benefit to accepting this offer. Tangerine mentioned they'll perform a credit check if I proceed. I know that having another card would increase my overall available credit, but I'm not sure if it's worth it.

Also, I’m planning to buy a home in the next 1-2 years. Could getting this card have any significant impact on my credit score?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I’m looking for a new credit card since me and my fiancée I have been with RBC’s student Cards for years, and clearly havnt been getting the benefits one should get with a card.

I was looking at Tangerine and was wondering what peoples personal experiences are with it?

For context: I am 22, working full time, spending about $500-1000 a month on gas, eating out, groceries, etc.

No rent yet, but next year.

Will be travelling to Europe for a month this summer, I understand Tangerine has some benefits for this, but don’t quite get it. If someone could break it down.

I like the no annual fee and others being allowed to have a card for free as well

Credit score is 800.

If anyone has any more information, recommendations or experiences that would be great

Thanks

February 2, 2023 -

Hey all,

I just tried to apply for Tangerine's Money-Back Credit Card over the phone. I checked all the boxes—I meet the minimum income of $12k to apply; I have a credit score of over 700; and I have a PC Master Card that's in good standing. Yet I failed the hard- credit score check!! First time I have ever failed a check like this, and besides the worry of how this will affect my score, I just can't seem to figure out why I was rejected!

Has anyone else experienced this before? Really quite bothered by this, as you could imagine. Thanks for any insight :)

Any thoughts on Tangerine Credit Cards?
May 28, 2023 - Yes it's very good. You can get up to 3 2% cash back categories. ... I mostly shop at Superstore and Costco, PC Mastercard does 2% and 1% respectively. And 3.5% at Shoppers. Costco card does 2% gas (more at Costco’s gas station). Simplii and Costco do 4% / 3% for restaurants and bars.

Hi!

I got a pre-approval for a tangerine world card… woohoo! I’m not sure if I should not take the offer or wait for LOC offers, take it and run with that and use it alongside my other two cards, or get it and cancel one of my cards. Would love your thoughts!

Tangerine world cards have no fees, nice perks, and the idea of having a card attached to a bank account again is so soothing, lol.

My two cards now are:

  1. Amex cobalt, sizeable limit, $15ish a month/180 a year, good perks (got it in the spring, tiny credit history)

  2. Capital 1 - pretty much the same limit as the pre-approved tangerine, $80 a year, no perks. BUT this card took me out of the credit gutter, it has the longest account age, 5 years almost)

. I guess I am weighing the $80 capital 1 fee against the harm canceling it would cause to my credit score due to overall credit age/history. I don’t need to have a high credit score for anything really, except I do kinda want to apply for a line of credit (so my credit is ~varied~ and improves my score, and it is probably a helpful tool to have).

I am keeping the Amex for sure. sooooo, actual question post-ramble, haha:

Will swapping the cap 1 for the tangerine card bottom-out my credit and make it harder to access the credit tool I actually want (line of credit) ???

is it worth the $80 a year just to keep all 3 cards? I’ve heard it’s not great to have too much cc availability but don’t know what ‘too much’ actually means?????

… last detail, as alluded to, I deeply fucked up my credit as a student, and I don’t fully fully trust myself not to do it again, even if I make ok money in a stable job, and have mostly paid off balances in full every time. there have been a few moments where the balances have crept up (never more than 20% utilization, but 20% of the credit I have already is pretty stressful to pay off?!?!?!)

Any wise words for me? Thanks in advance!

Just received an update from Tangerine that I’m pre-approved for money back credit card with a limit of $17,500. Anybody have experience with them? Is it any good?

I already have an RBC of $8000 limit and Canadian Tire MC of $4500.

Will there be credit check or any impact on credit?

Thanks for your insights.

PS - having too many credit cards is not an issue for me. I’m good with spending. 2 years back I was in so much debt that I could only pay interest and minimum. Learned from mistakes.

So Tangerine credit card provides 2% cashback on three merchant categories (eg. Groceries, gas, etc ). The problem is sometimes what you think is groceries is something else, eg. Costco doesn't count as groceries. One category I have is recurring bills. I recently set it up to pay my home/auto insurance. This went through as 3 separate transactions, one for each car plus the house. I checked my account and only two of them were recognized as recurring and the other as 'other' so I only received 0.5% instead of 2% on that one. Of course I called Tangerine but they said there is nothing they can do because it is up to the merchant how they categorize the transaction. I called the insurance and of course they don't really know anything about that and just blamed it on Tangerine. I feel like I am caught in the middle. At this point it is like why have this credit card when I don't know how it will be categorized when I make a purchase. Anyone else feel the same with this card or any other that offers similar benefits?

21 year old looking to get a second credit card.My current one ive been using is the RBC ion visa for the last 2 years. realizing now the rewards kinda suck with that card. i also couldve gotten the ion+ for no fee as im a student but didnt realize that when I first got my card.

Looking to get a second card now, probably a mastercard as i already have a visa. I spend about 1000 a month right now. not sure what rewards i want exactly so probably something with decent cash back.

looking for no fee (or low fee if rewards make up for it).

from my research the tangerine money back mastercard seems like a good choice, but i dont have that much knowledge on credit cards. Should I get this card or are there other options i should look at?

I'm thinking of switching from Simplii where I have a chequing account and LOC. I had investments with ING and then Tangerine back in the day. Their website was very user friendly. Fast forward how are things today? I'd be looking at day to day banking plus investments if the rates were good.

I'm in a slightly bad debt situation but finally making some significant dent in it.

I owe 1200 $ on Mc, 1900 $ on Visa and 2500 $ on a MBNA that was closed by the lender. All those are 19 %.

On my current salary, I pay 675 $ per month on those cards. Starting in April, I will pay 850 $ per month.

The Tangerine card offers 0 % interest for 6 months on transfers with a 2,5 % fees.

If my math checks out, that's 500 $ less interest in 6 months. But is it worth the hit on my credit score? The risk of a new card?

r/PersonalFinanceCanada on Reddit: [Advice] Undergrad student — Is the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card a good next step?
May 5, 2025 -

Hello everyone!

I’m an undergrad student currently using the TD basic cashback credit card, and I’m thinking about switching or adding the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card to get more value.

Here’s a breakdown of my typical monthly spending:

  • Total spending: ~$500

  • Shopping: ~$175

  • Groceries: ~$150

  • Subscription: ~$30

Tangerine offers 2% cashback on up to 3 categories if you open their savings account (2 without), and 0.5% on everything else. I'm mainly looking for a simple, no-fee card that gives me better cashback than what I'm getting with TD right now.

Would Tangerine be a good move, or is there a better option for a student in Canada?

Appreciate any suggestions!

I see a lot of credit card recommendations on this subreddit but this Tangerine card never seems to come up.

Is it considered “mid”? It’s free, has great travel benefits, and gives 2% cash back (groceries, restaurants, and gas stations) into my savings account on a monthly basis.

It also gives a confirmation for every purchase that qualities for the 2% discount. With some other cards you’re left guessing whether or not your purchase qualified for the full 2%. For example, I was using another card that did not consider Wal-Mart a grocery store and only gave 0.5% cash back.
