IIRC, RMS (who created GNU) said it's supposed to be pronounced the way it's pronounced in the Khoekhoe language, with a click at the beginning. However, since he (and most people) can't pronounce that, he pronounces it with a hard G instead, kind of like ganoo.

The Gnu - Wikipedia
December 29, 2025 - The jocular mispronunciation of "g-noo" in the song has led, through familiarity, to this becoming a widespread pronunciation of the word "gnu" in British English. The Longman Pronunciation Dictionary seems to suggest this has tainted the word itself. It says the pronunciations beginning "in g- are jocular, as indeed is the whole word: in serious discourse this animal is known as a wildebeest".

GNU stands for GNU's Not UNIX.
But why did Richard Stallman choose letter g? We get a recursive acronym regardless of a certain letter. I'm just curious.

Hard, not silent "G!" I used to pronounce it "noo" too! Just like the african agnimal! ... It's ga-new. Apparently when Mike Olson was thinking of names he was going to call it Antelope, but he thought it was too weird, so GNU it was.

Guh-nome is historically accurate. Silent G is very common and is absolutely fine. Jee-nome is just wrong. That needs to sit in a corner with the jif people.

The GNOME wiki clears it up reasonably well. "GNOME was originally an acronym for GNU Network Object Model Environment, but the acronym was dropped because it no longer reflected the vision of the GNOME project" GNU is pronounced Guh-NU, so GNOME was Guhnome. With the acronym being dropped it would stand to reason that Gnome is perfectly fine now. I still like Guhnome though :)

This is bugging me right now. What is the right way to say gnome? Is it g-nome, guh-nome, nome, ga-nom-eh, or is there even a correct answer?

A lot of people say "guh-nome", which I think is the official way to say it, in the same vein as GNU, which is supposed to be pronounced "guh-new". I usually prefer to say it like the magical creature or the lawn ornament, because I can't help feeling like an idiot saying "guh-nome" for some reason.
