If your family's income is under $10,000 then there is no way you are going to be able to pay $70k a year so its best to apply for a need-based scholarship even if your admissions chances are hurt. As an indian, banks there are not very generous and they require a show of money before they lend so in all honesty, this shouldn't even be a questions and apply for a scholarship so you don't burden your parents or yourself with finances. If they really want you, they will give you as much money as you need to put you in their school. Answer from lij1207 on collegevine.com

How bad will it impact on an international student who ED to UPenn asking for Financial Aid
After researching, I came to believe that it will affect my chances a lot. Which is sad. I worked so hard with my ECA and Activities. I ranked 1 from grade 9 to 12. It really hurt me when I found out UPenn is "Need Aware" for international but "Need blind" for US citizens. More on collegevine.com

International student – Need full ride to UPenn (Wharton). Is ED insanely hard because of need-aware?
As an international student, don’t be fixated on just one school. Have a couple because your chances are very low in the first place and also as a low income person. It’s just safe and will absorb the shock when the worse happens. And yes it’s insanely hard. More on reddit.com

r/IntltoUSA on Reddit: International student – Need full ride to UPenn (Wharton). Is ED insanely hard because of need-aware?
June 3, 2025 -

Hi. I’m an international student, and my absolute dream school is UPenn (Wharton). I’m planning to apply for Fall 2026 and would need a full ride (0 family contribution) to attend.

The problem is… I know UPenn is need-aware for internationals, and some people have told me to pick Dartmouth for Early Decision instead since it’s need-blind and also they are very generous.

I’ve seen mixed answers online — some say it’s almost impossible to get into Penn with a full ride as an international, while others say they know people who have done it.

So, my question is: Is it really insanely hard to get into UPenn ED with a $0 EFC as an international?

International students receive financial aid that matches their full demonstrated need, but like Cornell and Columbia, they are need-aware for international students (unless you're Canadian), meaning they will take the financial aid you will require into account during the admissions process. Thus, if you are a international student with a need for financial aid at Penn/Cornell/Columbia, acceptence will be more difficult than for a regular international or a FA-needing domestic applicant. However, if you are accepted, you will receive a similar FA package to that which you would recieve at Columbia, since both Penn and Columbia will meet your full demonstrated need. Cornell is both need aware and does not promise to meet full demonstrated financial need for international students, so you are not garunteed sufficient aid for your financial situation as you would be at Penn and Columbia. You should try applying to Yale, Princeton, Georgetown, MIT, and Amherst College also. These five colleges are both need-blind for international applicants and will meet international students' full demonstrated financial aid. That's not to say you shouldn't apply to Penn/Cornell/Columbia, but the aforementioned colleges might be something to additionally consider.

I’m an international on aid at penn. If you are Canadian or Mexican penn is needblind. I remember from a info session from Cornell that their aid packages include a lot of loans. I think it’s almost half loans. Penn on the other hand is all grants.
