Every J Crew tag I've ever seen has a style number and a season/year code listed on an interior tag . Style code is five digits, 1 letter and four numbers. Older style tags are five numbers. Season/year code is typically listed as follows: SP20 - Spring 2020 SU21 - Summer 2021 FW19 - Fall/Winter 2019 If you see "HO" that is basically short for "Holiday" and means Fall/Winter. Since I've officially renounced cheap sweaters (and the majority of women's sweaters under $300 are crap now) I've been scouring Poshmark for vintage JCREW and LLBEAN. In fact I just scored an amazing wool oarsman for $50 that I'm in love with.
But there are so many different J.CREW tags out there and the bit of online history I've found only covers a few of the tags from the 90s and early aughts.
Was thinking someone has or should catalog all of the JCREW tags to create a good reference. I'd be happy to do it if someone can give me an idea of how to start. Do the inside tags have a date code?

Can’t help much more that the commenter above about dating but I started doing this years ago and have been so thankful! eBay is actually really good for this too. I generally always just try to look for materials when looking for sweaters.

I need some help with finding the "style" names of my bigger branded items. Brands like Free People, White House Black Market, and J. Crew. Do they have numbers on the tags that I can search to find the original name of that item? What brands do you know of that do have identifying numbers?

Has the free people OB number ever worked for anyone? I search stacks of my stuff and never gotten a single result. And it never matches the style # on the product webpage

J Crew is the easiest. All of their tags will say the season and year the item is from (ex: SP 18, SU 16) and they also have a unique style number (F9143, A1842). You can Google those and immediately find stock photos, the original listing, etc. Free People uses a style number, I believe it starts with OB. Ann Taylor and LOFT also typically use a style number, if you type loft dot com/##### (whatever the style number is) you can almost always find the origial listing with the name, stock photos, etc. Also works with Ann Taylor, I just did that tonight to find a product name and photos. Ted Baker, BCBG, and Theory usually list the style name on one of the tags (materials/care).
