Discussions

On 2 October 2018, Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi dissident journalist, was killed by agents of the Saudi government after being lured into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. His body was allegedly cut into pieces while still alive by a doctor and a team of 14 others while they listened to music.
This is one of the cases, I was never able to fully wrap my head around: What exactly were the Saudis trying to accomplish? Did they try to make him disappear in secret and mess up massively? Or did they try to make it look as openly gruesome as possible on purpose to intimidate other dissidents, but underestimated the international reaction? What were they thinking? Is their something else? I just don't see how they gained much from this murder. They even had to execute their own secret service members. More on reddit.com

What would justice for Jamal Khashoggi look like?
You won't get real answers from Saudis for obvious reasons. When the murder happened the reaction was: Denial. He got lost and we didnt know where he was. Then when the Saudi state finally admitted that he was killed in the consulate they switched to it being an accident. Now it looks like we are in the stage of "Yes we killed him and he deserved it" More on reddit.com

Saudi leaders imagined that, having got away with worse atrocities in Yemen, that any outcry over the death of a single man in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul was something they could handle".
