Besides from the obvious software etc.. It seems that jamstik is just normal guitar guitar with the midi pick up built in, while as with fishman you have to attach it yourself. Am I missing something or does the jamstik have some other features which make it more "midi guitar" or is it virtually the same as having a normal guitar with the midi pick up attached ?

Just FYI - There's no such thing as a "midi pickup". It takes a lot of CPU power to listen to a guitar string and determine what pitch it's playing, then convert that into a MIDI note and send it out to a synthesizer (built in or external) which then produces the MIDI sound. The Jamstik has this stuff built into it along with a basic synth (as I recall) but the Fishman system offloads the pitch detection and synth to the laptop, which has a lot more CPU/GPU power than something you can build into a little guitar gizmo. Different approaches, but neither is more or less "MIDI" guitar. The end result is that you pluck a string an the MIDI sound of your choice comes out. There are a LOT of nuances to doing MIDI guitar right - determining bent notes, whammy bar activity and then on the MIDI side, dealing with the fact that you have 6 strings making notes all the time, how to handle bending. Both pitch detection, MIDI transmission and synths all have latency time, which adds up to change the way it feels when you play it.

May 15, 2024 - MIDI guitars interest me - I have Roland GK pickups on a guitar and a bass (OK for direct processing, not so good for generating MIDI), a YRG1000 MIDI controller, and an Artiphon Instrument 1. December 16, 2023 - The jamstik software does need to be running to some degree to get the most out of the instrument, but you could always set the Jamstik for either MPE or old fashioned MIDI in the software, then close the software and the Jamstik will stay with how you have it set up. For the video I did I just had the Jamstik plugged straight into a Deepmind 12 hardware synthesizer. Hope that helps! Click to expand... Thanks for those answers. Everything helps at this point. I am most interested in the MPE stuff because it would sort of rid us of many of the non-guitaristic character traits we have left as a result of the MIDI 1.0 protocol usage of (in particular) bends.
