Futon means bed. A traditional Japanese futon is a quilted pad laid on the floor. They are "good for your back" the same way sleeping on the floor is. Which is to say, sleeping flat on your back can help straighten your back and alleviate issues caused by bad posture. In the 80s Ikea sold a lot of things they called futons, which were often fabric wrapped foam pads. These were very popular with poor people and college students who couldn't afford good beds. A lot of companies knocked that off, and so the association has stuck. They got this idea from cheap Japanese beds being sold at the time. Short version, you get what you pay for, and it being from Japan doesn't make it better by default. More on reddit.com

I can't give you advice on a specific futon setup, but make sure to air it out regularly. Mattresses or futons left on the floor can get moldy because they absorb our moisture overnight. It is also why it is healthier to not make your bed in the morning. More on reddit.com

I'm not sure if this is the best thread for this, but this sub seems to have come up the most when searching for Japanese futon mattress. So, I have had my current japanese futon mattress since late 2023. I moved from my last place (renting a room in a house) to a studio on my own. I am thinking about getting a bed frame to get my mattress off the floor. From the research I have done it looks like a platform bed frame is what I would be looking for, but the ones with headboards seem to have too big of a gap for my mattress. My mattress isn't that thick and so it would leave a gap.
