As someone who recently moved into a temporary space, I went with two twin mattresses for the storage capability. I sleep on them stacked (so it’s super cushy). Mine don’t have obvious edges (to the touch), and I have a separate duvet to cover them when they are laid side to side. We barely notice the edges while “active” on the king configuration. I bought a frame from tatamiroom.com. I bought tatami mats from Tokyo Tatami Maker. They’re custom made to fit in the frame. You can order samples from Tokyo Tatami Maker before you buy. Tokyo Tatami Maker has a lot of choices. I did not choose the igusa. Igusa has a natural hay/grass-like scent. The odor fades over time. Personally I don’t find the odor offensive; just very strong. I’m scent sensitive so the igusa odor would definitely bother me while trying to sleep. I bought the Tokyo Gloss checkered pattern from the Tokyo series. The Tokyo Series Gloss can be wiped with a damp cloth if needed. I’m buying a mattress from Matsu; they’re in California. Matsu was recommended by another Reddit poster. I’m getting the four inch wool and cotton mattress. I called Matsu. They make their own mattresses. The woman I spoke with was very nice. J Life International sells Gold Bond mattresses. Gold Bond is an American company. I bought a Gold Bond mattress years ago for a living room futon chair. Bought it from a local futon store. I still have it. Gold Bond futon mattresses come in different models. The Gold Bond mattresses I saw are the typical cotton & foam American futon. They’re not bad mattresses but definitely not a shikibuton. I suspect J Life Internstional may not be as Japanese as they lead people to believe. More on reddit.com

I can't give you advice on a specific futon setup, but make sure to air it out regularly. Mattresses or futons left on the floor can get moldy because they absorb our moisture overnight. It is also why it is healthier to not make your bed in the morning. More on reddit.com

We tried sleep training and decided it wasn't for us (but still zero judgement for those who do it, and I'm not willing to argue with anyone here about it) so we will be continuing to co-sleep.
Because of this, our queen bed isn't going to work for our family anymore. My husband wants to buy a king, but I'm curious about a Japanese floor mattress instead. He said he could be game. I like the idea of being able to roll it up and put it away during the day and have more space for *activities* during the day
I also like that they're available made of more natural materials and much less expensive than a king sized bed.
Anyway, anyone have experience with this? Brands you like, how was the lifestyle change etc?

I slept on futons in Japan and then America for about 3 years. What makes a futon work is the floor it sits on. In Japan it's springy tatami mats. When I had a vaulted wood floor under mine in America, it was great. When I had it on carpet over concrete, it was unusable. You will also need to air out the futon not infrequently, which could be an issue depending on your space. Just fyi. I would not go back to a futon. But I am going to get a thick American style futon mattress to have in the nursery for when my toddler wants to snuggle to sleep, once I move my gel mattress off the floor of the nursery and back to my own room. That worked great for us.

A little background:
I (31M) just moved into a new 1 bedroom apartment. I have moved many times and have come to despise mattresses due to their bulkyness, cost, and difficulty with reselling or disposing of them. I'm living alone but have a partner that lives separately in her own apartment and would like us to be comfortable when she stays the night.
TL:DR:
Seems like 2 twin XLs would be great for its modularity, but Im worried that the seam between the two futons would be uncomfortable. A king sized would be great and comfy, but I'm concerned that it will be difficult to roll / fold away, or hard to clean.

I have a king and wish we had gone with two twins. It’s nearly impossible for me to move on my own, I need my husbands help. It’s also hard to find a place to lift it to air out, because it’s so large and awkward. The way that ours is designed (cotton with wool fill from the futon shop), the seams are flat, flush against the edge. I don’t think there would be any issue with pushing two together.
