r/minimalism on Reddit: Best decently priced Authentic Japanese futon? and foldable tatami mat
January 12, 2024 -

I'm looking for the most traditional, basic japanese futon & foldable tatami mats one can find, that also:

-ships to EU (NL), preferably not have to mess around with shipping import tax duty costs-is maybe 2 to 3 inches thick?- I'd rather not spend more than €350 on a single futon, is that possible?

Is a fitted cover necessary or can I just use a normal bed sheet cover? And slightly concerned about period leaking, normally I have a waterproof mattress protector but it doesn't seem a good idea to use on a futon because it's not breathable? Any advice for protecting against stains?

I occasionally have 2 people in my bed, ideally I'd like double but I heard that would be very heavy for me to lift. My idea is to buy x2 single futons and then use x2 foldable tatami mats, and my existing double duvet. (and to only use one futon when it's just me) I live in a very cold house, often feels like the same temperature as outside... (like 5-12 degrees C) so I'm hoping I can avoid mould with regular beating & airing. is this wishful thinking or is it possible? Send me some tips please!

I bought a frame from tatamiroom.com. I bought tatami mats from Tokyo Tatami Maker. They’re custom made to fit in the frame.  You can order samples from Tokyo Tatami Maker before you buy. Tokyo Tatami Maker has a lot of choices. I did not choose the igusa. Igusa has a natural hay/grass-like scent. The odor fades over time. Personally I don’t find the odor offensive; just very strong. I’m scent sensitive so the igusa odor would definitely bother me while trying to sleep.  I bought the Tokyo Gloss checkered pattern from the Tokyo series. The Tokyo Series Gloss can be wiped with a damp cloth if needed. I’m buying a mattress from Matsu; they’re in California. Matsu was recommended by another Reddit poster.  I’m getting the four inch wool and cotton mattress. I called Matsu. They make their own mattresses. The woman I spoke with was very nice. J Life International sells Gold Bond mattresses. Gold Bond is an American company.  I bought a Gold Bond mattress years ago for a living room futon chair. Bought it from a local futon store.  I still have it. Gold Bond futon mattresses come in different models. The Gold Bond mattresses I saw are the typical cotton & foam American futon. They’re not bad mattresses but definitely not a shikibuton. I suspect J Life Internstional may not be as Japanese as they lead people to believe.

I'll explain how I got my futon from Japan and how I care for it. I initially looked on Amazon and it was clear most of the sub $300 (I'm in Canada) were Chinese knock offs. There were authentic Japanese items which would be delivered from Japan, but they were $600+. I decided to look on Amazon Japan, and settled on a very basic single futon that was 3cm thick, all cotton, for around ¥8,000 which was around $80 CDN, and used a proxy service to ship it by air, which was around $300. I'm happy with mine, it's basic and supports my weight ok. (80kg, 5'10) My sheets from my twin mattress fit for the most part, but fitted sheets didn't fit. However, I used my duvet covers as fitted sheets instead. There is a portion that has to stay open/unbuttoned but it works. The duvet covers can bit a bit of work to get on, but the fact that it's a light futon works good, and I sorta fold it in half length wise and get the cover on. I found a spare foam mattress that wasn't being used and that helped make things a bit more comfortable. It's one of those tri fold style, very narrow but still works wonders. For a long time I would put a wool sheet on the floor (not carpet but plastic flooring) then the foam, then futon. But I took apart one of those cheap wood shelves and made a makeshift flat frame, to keep the bed off the ground. Every so often I open the windows and give it a good airing. I live in an apartment so I don't want to be at it or have it over the balcony, so I open the windows and prop the futon up and have fans circulating air over & under and the futon is still smelling fresh. (Obviously, ones odor will vary, so you need to adjust the routine based on your own needs) I don't think plastic sheet will be an issue other than finding one that will fit and stay in place, after all it won't be a permanent thing, but for sure have a good absorbent layer between it and the futon as moisture is created from the combination of body heat, cool air and having a layer to absorb it before it reaches the futon will help. Futon sizes are not similar to mattress sizes, so some of your sheets will fit ok, some like fitted one may not fit at all. You can get futon toppers and sheets, but availability will depend on where you are and if it's something sellers have in stock. I looked into getting tatami mats, but allot of them were not actually tatami. They were plastic. Real tatami is a woven grass and it's done as large sections that normally don't fold . If they have to fold, usually they are made weaker. So I'd be careful. I wanted to order tatami but the price was insane because they are expensive and large, it drove the shipping costs way up. If you have Japan stores in your area like Daiso, they sometimes do carry Futon supplies, but it's hit and miss. I think if you want to get a real Japanese futon at a reasonable price, you need to import one. It's a bit of a pain, but worth it. Feel free to ask any questions if I missed something.
