Oracle has set Sept. 22, 2016, as the official General Availability (GA) release date for Java 9, with the Feature Complete release coming in mid-December.

The company is using a time-driven release model, rather than a feature-driven release model. Thus, the next release will come in March 2018 and will be named Java 18.3 -- the year and month of the release.

For example, Java SE 9 was a non-LTS release and immediately superseded by Java SE 10 (also non-LTS), Java SE 10 in turn was immediately superseded by Java SE 11. Java SE 11 however is an LTS release, and therefore Oracle Customers will receive Oracle Premier Support and periodic update releases, even after Java SE 12 was released. Java 9 is end-of-life since 2018-03-20. Unless you have a support contract for this version and a compelling reason to stay on the old version you should definitely upgrade to a newer version with active support.
