I guess the question is "why"?

Microsoft has done everything since Java was created to discourage Java usage. Microsoft even made their own clean room version of Java, C#.

Why would they want to support Java, possibly even letting it compete with their C# which they spent a lot of money to develop?

If your going to do android work I'd suggest IntelliJ as its the base for android studio.
