Trying to learn Java using CodeAcademy, but it all seems incredibly trivial. Are there better places out there?

The sidebar in r/learnjava has good resources. I'd advise to use the MOOC Object Oriented Programming with Java from the University of Helsinki as main course and the tutorial that u/krabby_patty suggested as secondary resource. Both are excellent and very comprehensive. The MOOC has graded exercises that test your skills and that need to be completed before moving on, so you will definitely learn more and gain more practice through the MOOC than through Java for Complete Beginners. Don't waste your time with the Codecademy (no a as in academy, it's cademy) course. It doesn't go deep enough, teaches only basic syntax, but not actual programming. You won't even learn how to write a complete class, nor will you learn how to compile a program. The course ends where Java actually begins. More on reddit.com

MOOC vs Codecademy

Mooc.fi absolutely! This isn't even debatable. It won't only teach you Java, but both procedural and object oriented programming paired with fundamental data structures, algorithms and TDD concepts. Codecademy absolutely can not compare to that in any way possible.

I started learning Javascript and Java on codeacademy, but I've heard bad things. Where can I go to get a better education?

Java: MOOC Object Oriented Programming with Java from the University of Helsinki. Hands down the best free Java course. Since you mentioned "choose your own adventure" games: Inform7 is a system/tool specifically created for this type of games Twine is another such system that produces HTML/CSS/JavaScript and thus can run from anywhere The statements that you have heard about Codecademy are true. It is good to learn simple languages, like HTML and CSS, but fails miserably at more complex languages, like Java. The online editor is not suitable for OOP languages. It does not teach you how to write a complete class; it does not teach you how to compile and run your code; it only teaches syntax but not actual programming. More on reddit.com

I am 25 and I am ready to leave my dead-end job. I wasted a lot of time when I was younger with YOLO as my excuse and now I am regretting it, I want to start a career. I owe thousands to colleges that I enrolled in but never finished and I do not want to accrue more debt. I also unfortunately do not have the time to do college and I’m looking for something self-paced.

I am liking what I have learned so far from Codecademy and I am considering buying the pro membership in order to fully learn it, and build projects to put on my resume. But would other developers say it's worth it? I'm very serious and focused on learning these skills, but I want to know the best place to learn.

No. The free courses are way too shallow and the paid ones are overpriced. Codecademy is not in our recommended learning resources. If you want to learn Java, do the MOOC Java Programming . Contrary to Codecademy, this is a proper University course. It is completely free of charge, textual, and extremely practice oriented.

Personally, I think java and javascript are only similar while doing very basic stuff (for loops, while loops, etc…) . Python gives you a good programming base but it is vastly different than java/javascript. Each language also has different purposes.
