In what scenario does using Java in Lambda make sense? : r/aws
March 28, 2024 - So if you have lambda that’s rarely used and basically always has to be coldstarted Java is probably not your language. But if you have more frequent access the speed of the following executions will probably outweigh the cold start ... While comparatively true, this is mostly a non-issue for 99% of applications given the improvements over the last 5 years. For people that do care, there are many options to almost entirely eliminate the issue. Snapstart, Provisioned concurrency, etc etc. ... Rust on lambda is awesome.

Java for AWS Lambda
Keep it simple and you will be good. We follow the following for all our lambdas: Use plain SQL query instead of jpa don't use Spring Boot or any other framework if your use case is simple you don't need dependency injection for simple use case that involves couple of classes. Just create static objects and pass them around. Create objects ( eg objectMapper, AWS clients) only once use RDS proxy instead of creating DB connection directly use SnapStart use shadow jar use minimal dependencies.. exclude unnecessary transitive dependencies if you do http calls to other services make sure they are performant. If possible use async calls, parallelize calls if possible use lightweight objects, don't use xml, Json libraries if you can(most of the time simple String append is faster) run the lambda locally and profile it etc More on reddit.com

Why has Java fallen out of favor for use in lambdas?
Were they ever IN favor? Cold start times for JVM based lambdas were awful when I experimented with them a few years ago. I've read recently that improvements have been made, but honestly I like my lambdas to be extremely light weight, so interpreted languages just feel more in line with what I'm doing. In what scenario does using Java in Lambda make sense?
Very often the best language for a team/org is not the "best" language for particular component. If it's a Java based team it often doesn't make sense to dump all that investment just for Lambda if Java performance there is acceptable. Personally I won't use Node for anything if I can possibly avoid it. If Python isn't fast enough and in particular if threading will help I'll use Go. But even as anti-Node as I admit I am, I absolutely respect that in shops with a lot of Javascript talent due to frontend work it often makes the most sense to go with Node for backend work despite its many hair pulling issues. It's much better to be pragmatic than "right". Lambda supports a ton of languages (effectively all of them if we count custom runtimes) because it's pragmatic. More on reddit.com

Is anyone using Java Spring Boot in AWS Lambda?
We decided to go against it. As frameworks go it is quite heavy and with lambdas you don't need to be concerned so much with routing and servers. Lambdas are best kept small, almost at the function level. I have seen them best work with much smaller dependency injections like guice or dagger to help maintain a good structure and avoid anti patterns along side a build tool like maven. Hope this helps More on reddit.com

April 17, 2025 - We use the !Ref function to dynamically reference these parameter values in our template to define our lambda properties. We define a very basic Timeout of 10 seconds and MemorySize of 512 MB in our template, but it can be updated as per requirement. Now that we’ve defined our template, we need to create our CloudFormation stack using the AWS CLI: aws cloudformation create-stack \ --stack-name baeldung-cloudformation-java-21-lambda-function \ --template-body file://java-21-lambda-function-template.yaml \ --capabilities CAPABILITY_IAM \ --parameters \ ParameterKey=LambdaHandler,ParameterValue=com.baeldung.lambda.LambdaHandler\ ParameterKey=S3BucketName,ParameterValue=baeldung-lambda-tutorials-bucket \ ParameterKey=S3Key,ParameterValue=java-lambda-function-0.0.1.jar

Create your first Java AWS Lambda function in minutes
The println statement logs data to the AWS environment. The function alters the payload by setting it to lower-case letters and switching various letters to numbers. The altered payload returns to the Lambda framework, which concludes the function call. It’s possible to add extra functionality to your Java Lambda function if you link to the AWS SDK library and reference classes such as the RequestHandler and the Lambda Context.

r/java on Reddit: Java for AWS Lambda
October 2, 2024 -

Hi,

What is the best way to run lambda functions using Java, I have read numerous posts on reddit and other blogs and now I am more confused what would be a better choice?

Our main use case is to parse files from S3 and insert data into RDS MySQL database.

If we use Java without any framework, we dont get benefits of JPA, if we use Spring Boot+JPA then application would perform poorly? Is Quarkus/Micronaut with GraalVM a better choice(I have never used Quarkus/Micronaut/GraalVM, does GraalVM require paid license to be used in production?), or can Quarkus/Micronaut be used without GraalVM, and how would be the performance?
