If you really don't have shortcut to "Configure Java" in the menu start, then run directly this Java Panel by accessing C:\Program Files\Java\jreJAVA_VERSION\bin\javacpl.exe or C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jreJAVA_VERSION\bin\javacpl.exe
If you only have jdk installed, then C:\Program Files\Java\jdkJAVA_VERSION\jre\bin\javacpl.exe

First you have to install Java, after installing it, you look for it in the Control Panel.

You can click on Search present on taskbar or press Ctrl + Q.
Search "Configure Java" and click on it.
That should open the Java Control Panel.
Right-click on the Start button and select the Control Panel option. In the Windows Control Panel, click on Programs. Click on the Java icon to open the Java Control Panel.
What happens if you try to launch the Java Control Panel applet manually?
Click Start, Run and in the box enter (or copy and paste):
%SystemRoot%\system32*javacpl.cpl*
Click OK.
Does the Java Control Panel open? If not, what does happen?
When looking at your Control Panel list of things, right click one of the icons and choose 'Sort by Name' to reorder the Control Panel listing alphabetically. Could be your Java icon is hiding out at the bottom of the list and is just out of sight.
"Sort by Name' also works in your Start, Programs listing too.

On Windows XP, I have no %SystemRoot%\system32*javacpl.cpl*
as of this writing (Apr.18, 2013), Java is at Version 7 Update 21.
The following solution that I read elsewhere works for me:
Try running the following command via Start > Run: javaws -viewer

- In the "Search Control Panel" box, type "Java".
- It should bring up a match entitled "Java (XX-bit)" (where XX is the bit-level of the Java install)
- Double-click that icon to open the Java Control Panel.
To locate the Java Control panel, simply type Configure Java in the search bar on the side.

When I go to the control panel, I click programs and when I click Java, it says application not found. Please help. the reason I wanted it was because I needed to update my java version and when I go to the command prompt and run java --version , it shows the un-changed version from before I downloaded it from the Oracle website. I don't really know anything about this stuff and it really confuses me. I could open it before this happened too, and I did the JAVA_HOME thing but it didn't seem to do anything. When I went to open the panel again, it gave me the error.
I'm trying to open an .jar file on my windows 10. I have confirmed using the command console that I do have Java on my device (using >java version, which results in displaying which version of java is on my computer)
The issue is if I am opening a .jar file selecting "open with..." Java is not appearing, nor can I find the application. I've tried to use control panel-associate file type with the Java app but once again, Java is not appearing as an option. If I am browsing through my files, I can find under this path c:/programfiles/Java/jre1.8.0_441 which has a bunch of miscellaneous files I don't really know much about, but I can't actually find the Java application.
Maybe I need to reinstall Java? I'm missing something and am not tech savy enough to deduce where to look or what actions to take. Assistance would be appreciated thank you!
