The bundled Java Runtime Environment on MacOS is located at ~/Library/Application\ Support/minecraft/runtime/ If you go ahead and run the following line of code in your terminal: ~/Library/Application\ Support/minecraft/runtime/jre-legacy/mac-os/jre-legacy/jre.bundle/Contents/Home/bin/java -version You should see something along the lines of Java version "1.8.0_74" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_74-b02) Currently the following Java versions are pre-packaged with Minecraft, they are, at the time of writing: Java 1.8.0_74 => "java runtime legacy/jre-legacy" Java/"Openjdk" version 16.0.1 => "java runtime alpha" Java/"Openjdk" version 17.0.1 => "java runtime beta" Java/"Openjdk" version 17.0.3 => "java runtime gamma" If you would like to just run a jar straight from Finder or otherwise by right clicking and opening it however, you can simply install OpenJDK at https://adoptopenjdk.net/index.html TLDR; You can install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) over at https://adoptopenjdk.net/index.html or https://www.java.com or otherwise. If you do not wish to go through the install process, you may simply choose to use the pre-packaged JRE. JDK contains developer tools as well as the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), so the download is a bit larger. Yep, you can go here for open jdk… https://www.azul.com/downloads/?os=macos#download-openjdk I am using version 18.x to run ManyMC for Minecraft. Just be sure to get the “arm” version. I use the .DMG and run the installer.
