You can pass a custom comparison function to Array.prototype.sort(), like so:
var sortedArray = array.sort(function(a, b) { return a - b; });
This would sort an array of integers in ascending order. The comparison function should return:
- an integer that is less than
0if you wantato appear beforeb - an integer that is greater than
0if you wantbto appear beforea 0ifaandbare the same
So, for this example you would want something like:
var sortedArray = array.sort(function(a, b) {
return b[0] - a[0];
});
If you wanted to sort on both elements of each sub-array (ie. sort by the first element descending, then if they are the same then sort by the second element descending), you could do this:
var sortedArray = array.sort(function(a, b) {
if (a[0] == b[0]) {
return a[1] - b[1];
}
return b[0] - a[0];
});

Just an example of string sorting because I couldn't find any other.
Help sorting an array of objects

return b[0] - a[0];

You can use sort method and first sort by first elements and then by second.
var array = [[123, 3], [745, 4], [643, 5], [643, 2]];
array.sort(([a, b], [c, d]) => c - a || b - d);
console.log(array)

By default, the sort method sorts elements alphabetically. To sort numerically just add a new method which handles numeric sorts (sortNumber, shown below) -
var numArray = [140000, 104, 99];
numArray.sort(function(a, b) {
return a - b;
});
console.log(numArray);
Documentation:
Mozilla Array.prototype.sort() recommends this compare function for arrays that don't contain Infinity or NaN. (Because Infinity - Infinity is NaN, not 0).
Also examples of sorting objects by key.
Just building on all of the above answers, they can also be done in one line like this:
var numArray = [140000, 104, 99];
numArray = numArray.sort(function (a, b) { return a - b; });
//outputs: 99, 104, 140000
Sort homes by price in ascending order:
homes.sort(function(a, b) {
return parseFloat(a.price) - parseFloat(b.price);
});
Or after ES6 version:
homes.sort((a, b) => parseFloat(a.price) - parseFloat(b.price));
Some documentation can be found here.
For descending order, you may use
homes.sort((a, b) => parseFloat(b.price) - parseFloat(a.price));
Here's a more flexible version, which allows you to create reusable sort functions, and sort by any field.
const sort_by = (field, reverse, primer) => {
const key = primer ?
function(x) {
return primer(x[field])
} :
function(x) {
return x[field]
};
reverse = !reverse ? 1 : -1;
return function(a, b) {
return a = key(a), b = key(b), reverse * ((a > b) - (b > a));
}
}
//Now you can sort by any field at will...
const homes=[{h_id:"3",city:"Dallas",state:"TX",zip:"75201",price:"162500"},{h_id:"4",city:"Bevery Hills",state:"CA",zip:"90210",price:"319250"},{h_id:"5",city:"New York",state:"NY",zip:"00010",price:"962500"}];
// Sort by price high to low
console.log(homes.sort(sort_by('price', true, parseInt)));
// Sort by city, case-insensitive, A-Z
console.log(homes.sort(sort_by('city', false, (a) => a.toUpperCase()
)));
