I must say this movie was so enjoyable. I recall Ginna Claire Mason from last year's A Heidelberg Holiday. I still have A Holiday Spectacular still on the dvr somewhere. Anyway, she's a wonderful singer and I like her speaking voice. At times she reminds me of Jessy Schram. Her eyes sparkle too. Her co-star Jordan Litz also is a good singer. They sang well together. Not just them too. It was nice to hear Stephanie Sy sing again. Her singing in The Santa Summit was one of the pleasant surprises of that film. The plot wasn't heavy and but we did have a few tropes; the death of a parent, the struggle of sacrifice by one parent and then the guilt that child feels because of that sacrifice. It's an endless cycle! Anyway, nobody was a Grinch in this one although the cousin was a dweeb. I just think he needed to be just a little cooler. It was very much like a Cyrano/Roxanne/Christian thing going on. Well, to a point. He did get a spontaneous kiss from her which certainly thrilled me. Too bad he didn't deserve it. I don't know how accurate the heartbreak at the beginning was. I mean if she didn't have an agent surely someone would have given her a call then before she left the Gate City for the Big Apple. But maybe that's part of the struggle. Heartless people!
Anyway, it was breezy and jazzy. Some good dialogue and quite the paean to the struggle of the up-and-coming Broadway actors and actresses. That restaurant reminds me of a one I know where the wait staff sings opera. They are young singers from the various schools and companies around. Speaking of, I can't help thinking of two famous 19th century opera composers with the name of our main character too. Too bad we didn't get a chance to see our main character on her first trip to NYC way back when. Show her autn Carol and her Hazel. That would have added to the movie. But I can't fault it. It was a joyful film with lots of fun music and singing. I especially liked the song at the end. A much better duet song than the others they suggested. O, Ginna co-wrote it. Excellent. Well done. So overall a very enjoyable film. Nothing too heavy with lots of finger-popping moments and the effulgent charm of Ginna Claire Mason to carry it through the end.
