“The Pepsi Cola” addict by June Gibbons is finally getting a reprint! It has to be because Marjorie Wallace’s “The Silent Twins” has been adapted into a major motion picture.

I am mildly interested. Is there a reason why collectors don't want to share copies digitally? It seems like archive.org is created for things such as this.

June and Jennifer Gibbons -- also known as The Silent Twins -- refused to communicate with anyone other than each other. In 1993 Jennifer died under mysterious circumstances. June's response, "I am free at last."
This reminds me of the "anorexic twins" on intervention. https://youtu.be/tUYfX37paoI Basically these twins were anorexic and depressed and engaged in negative behaviors but they were always essentially challenging eachother to be worse and just very codependent for negative things. Less extreme than only talking to eachother, and these twins got help after going to rehab but now live in different countries. They both implied they could only live normally away from eachother More on reddit.com

June and Jennifer Gibbons, “The Silent Twins.”
There was another set of twins who acted similarly. They were from Northern Europe I believe and one moved to the US. Once they were separated everything was fine. But then they got back together and almost instantly went nuts. There’s even video of one throwing herself under a semi trying to kill herself. She survived but yea when they were near each other they just went nuts More on reddit.com

I watched "The Silent Twins" recently. I really loved it, but I think I'm in the minority. Super stylized, and weird. give it a shot
I had no clue this came out already, such shit marketing imo. More on reddit.com

I Found a Rare Copy of June Allison Gibbons’ Outsider Novel
March 26, 2019 - Shortly after I first began working at the British Library, I knew that I’d use my newfound access to 150 million media objects—magazine articles, oral history recordings and books, many of them rare—to get my hands on The Pepsi-Cola Addict, the sole novel by June Allison Gibbons, one half of the infamous “silent twins.” Connoisseurs of weird crime stories—or weird twin stories, for that matter, or the surprisingly rich subgenre of weird twin crime stories—can do no better than the bizarre, tragic yarn of the Gibbons twins.

A review of June-Alison Gibbons’ unsettling novel The Pepsi-Cola Addict
October 21, 2024 - This is, roughly, the premise of June-Alison Gibbons’ 1981 novel The Pepsi-Cola Addict, a raw and distressing young-adult novel that was actually written by a young adult. Gibbons was just sixteen-years-old when she wrote The Pepsi-Cola Addict and pooled her dole money with her twin sister Jennifer to have it published by a vanity press.

r/books on Reddit: “The Pepsi Cola” addict by June Gibbons is finally getting a reprint! It has to be because Marjorie Wallace’s “The Silent Twins” has been adapted into a major motion picture.
September 20, 2021 -

If you ever read “The Silent Twins” you are probably as excited for this news as I am. The book certainly has issues but the excerpts of June and Jennifer’s novels pointed to a pair of exciting voices. They always reminded me of S.E. Hinton but with an apocalyptic or nihilistic streak, Anthony Burgess would be a decent comparison.

The Gibbons Twins originally published their novels through Vanity Presses, paying out of pocket from their small disability pension. I think talents like theirs could find a publisher today but in the 1980’s there was little appreciation for Outsider Art, in the Literary World at least. That first printing is now extremely collectible, more so with this movie I’m sure. It was so hard to find that searchers would decide to keep it to themselves rather than sharing a PDF online, even if they were only able to acquire a photocopy.

For those unfamiliar with the book it is a young adult novel in the common trope of a misfit struggling against an uncaring world. The titular protagonist is a juvenile delinquent so addicted to Pepsi Cola that he drinks 300 in a single day. This is set in an America that could only exist in the yearning imagination of a young British girl. Parallels could easily be drawn to Kafka’s “Amerika” for this reason. The exaggeration and density of the prose (the small excerpts I’ve been able to read) also remind me a bit of Amos Tutuola and Roussel’s “Impressions d’Afrique”, another writer who wrote from imagination on a continent they would never visit.

The reprint is coming from MIT Press in 2023 and I’ve heard rumors that one of the actors in the biopic will be publishing one of Jennifer’s novels on their personal imprint. I don’t have the best expectations for the movie itself but the resulting reprints are very exciting!

June & Jennifer Gibbons (The Silent Twins) — Unresolved
The story of the Silent Twins, June and Jennifer Gibbons is less of a scary crime story, and more of a tragic, heartbreaking story of two girls who were left behind by the system, due to a mixture of their race and their speech impediment, and as a result were forced to retreat into a world where they only really had each other to rely on - which is an unhealthy relationship dynamic for anyone, let alone two young girls facing a staggering amount of racism and prejudice.
