Jurassic World Dominion - Dinosaurs in movie Checklist
The Real Story Behind the Dino Feathers in ‘Jurassic World Dominion’
Did anyone else notice that the dinosaurs are not integral to the plot of Dominion?
In the new Jurassic World Dominion trailer, it shows their most accurate raptor yet. It actually has wings and feathers. Not sure what species, so the size might be wrong. Only two fingers should be visible though, they went with the feather sleave thing. Doesn't look like the hands are pronated.

The dinosaur that is most closely linked to the story is Blue’s baby but she is taken by the same people, at the same time, and ends up in the same place as Maisie. This means you could completely remove beta and the plot would still be the same. In that version Owen just doesn’t ask if he can spare 8 minutes to get her and carry her unconscious on his back for the rest of the climax.
The dinosaurs seem to be what characters encounter in-between the plot points of the actual James Bond-esque story of an evil tech genius manufacturing a food shortage through genetic engineering.
I’ve only seen the movie once but I’m a filmmaker and I teach storytelling at the college level so I can’t help but look for this stuff. I can not think of a time where the dinosaurs advanced the story, had an effect on the arc of our characters or supported the theme of the story.
I won’t weigh in on if this makes the MOVIE good or bad because obviously it has not hindered the enjoyment by a large, happy audience. But I will say, it’s not very clean storytelling to have the main attraction to your film be kind of a neat bonus, versus the core foundation.
Dominion is not the only movie guilty of this but it’s a pretty good example. Imagine if, in the next Fast & the Furious movie, the characters drove their cars but only to get to places where they then got out and like hacked into online banking sites or something. You’d notice that the cars were technically in it but were kind of window dressing in a movie that didn’t really utilize them in the way you’d expect.
This kind of thing happens when you’re this deep into IP-first filmmaking. You don’t necessarily have an organic, serialized story unfolding but you do have a box you have to check. In this case that requirement is dinosaurs.
