Thoughts on Jurassic World Dominion?
What is your opinion on Jurassic World: Dominion?
TLDR warning, if you don’t want to read my mammoth of a review, here’s the quick summary. 8.2/10, enjoyed myself very much watching this movie. Some scenes went on too long while some were too short, overall solid addition to the Jurassic park franchise, and it ranks 3rd out of the 6 movies, squeezing in between TLW at 2, and Jurassic world at 4.
Now, let’s get into the meaty stuff.
First off, my overall thoughts. The movie was relatively well paced, the 1st act was very janky, but with the cutting of the prologue, and other scenes, I can see it being much more smooth and coherent if those scenes are added in the extended edition that’s been hinted. The 2nd and 3rd acts were honestly pretty great, the settings were beautiful, the cinematography was on point with any other major blockbuster, and the CGI for the dinosaurs was still top notch, with some scenes however looking a little off. Most of the new Characters were great, the Dinosaur action was solid (when it was there), and the overall ending of the franchise (presumably) is decent, could have been much much worse.
I’ll go in depth firstly about each major character, and secondary characters to a lesser degree, this will include certain dinosaurs.
Owen Grady: Honestly, this may have been Chris Pratts best acting in the series so far, but the dialogue for him compared to Jurassic world was definitely a downgrade. His moment with Claire while the plane was on course to crash was really well done, you could sense true worry and care for Claire and that she needed to be the one to save Massie if only one of them could. His action stunts were also pretty good, no complaints there. Overall, not a bad movie for him, but his character had a lot more potential and was wasted, mostly in Fallen Kingdom.
Claire Dearing: a slower movie for Claire character growth wise compared to Fallen Kingdom, but was still an overall good character. Her scenes with Massie felt genuine and real, like a mother who has no experience trying to care for a child who is very special and needs protection. Her scenes with Owen were good, and a solid female lead in the trilogy. However, her character definitely had more potential.
Alan Grant: He’s back, and honestly he feels no different than any of his previous roles in the series. Sam Neil is an incredible actor and all his scenes were great, a true embodiment of an awkward and lonely palaeontologist who takes that step forward out of his comfort zone and finally does what he should have done 30+ years ago, show his feelings to the woman he loves. Great actor, great character, no complaints.
Ellie Sadler: Ellie was.. the most disappointing original character to come back. Not to say she wasn’t good, she was overall pretty solid, but her character seems a bit off. She’s not as spunk or rebellious as her JP incarnation, and takes a step back almost in comparison to Claire. Which in of itself isn’t a bad thing, this is Claire’s trilogy, Ellie shouldn’t take away from the spotlight, but maybe it would have been good if she did just a little? Definitely could have been used more effectively.
Ian Malcolm: What’s there to say, he’s great. His snarky remarks, amazing sarcasm, and his beliefs are still very much in touch in this movie. Similar to Alan, no real complaints from me, probably could have had slightly more screen time? That’s about it though. His scene with the giga was hilariously dumb but awesome, glad he got his comeback compared to his similar scenes in JP.
Massie Lockwood: Honestly, definitely the biggest improvement in acting and character development from Fallen Kingdom to Dominion. Her development from hidden away girl to strong willed and independent young Woman was a good route for her character. She takes after Owen a lot, and her connection with Beta is similar to Blue and Owens, a future Raptor/Human pairing. She’s snarky, doesn’t get pushed around, and isn’t immature and dumb in her decision making. Overall great improvement over a pretty poor character in FK.
Lewis Dodgeson: This is a hard character to rate. Firstly, he’s a pretty grounded “villain”. He’s not some super evil scummy military officer or evil company, just a man willing to do anything to get what he wants and to control all he can. His character in the movie is odd, he’s sketchy, skiddish, not all that intimidating, which highlights that he’s not some crazy super villain, just a businessman breaking the law to achieve his goals. He’s blinded by his greed, and makes poor decisions that causes his downfall, which isn’t a bad thing. He’s a character that could have use a lot more growth throughout multiple movies, but for a single appearance (Major one anyway) in a film his character wasn’t all that bad. I’ll save the locusts for another talking point.
Now, we move to the secondary characters/Dinosaurs that were relevant. I won’t go through all the Dinosaurs and animals in the film, more the ones who stood out/failed to have a bigger impact like they should have.
