April 24, 2020Kali vbox ova, installed from offensive-security and imported in VBox, boots and loads and get stuck at this black screen with dragon. No keys are working. Hyper-V and/or WSL2 is disabled, also tried tuning allotted resources, doesn't work. VBox version 6.18.
Hard to troubleshoot this setup because the VM image should be a sort of "no brainer." Have you tried the VMware image with VMware Workstation ? Check the Kali Linux downloads page for the link to their prepared Kali VMware images . The image is packed with 7-Zip , which will also need installed. Choose a location for the VM files and right-click on the downloaded image, then choose 7-Zip > Extract Here. After the VM files are unpacked, launch VMware Workstation and at the main menu choose "Open a Virtual Machine". Navigate to the folder where the files were unpacked, and select the .vmx file. Select the VM and launch. If that works, go and be merry. If not, check back and we will likely have to get into details for what your device is to hunt down an unusual conflict. Also, have you run other virtual machines? In a case like this is it's worth verifying basic opportunity to install and run any VM. For example, could do an Ubuntu Desktop install and see how that compares. Those usually require to boot from ISO. So if that works, and neither Kali VM image has, you will also have learned the skills to retry with a standard Kali image. The ISO method requires creating a machine first. Lookup the documentation on system requirements for the settings. Then, search installing from an ISO (it's not hard). edit - had a thought - what are your actual VM settings and system specs? It's possible your device can't handle the typical VM settings in the prepared image. Like overtaxed RAM, CPU...less likely disk space. More on reddit.com

July 10, 2020I feel so disorganized. I am studying for the OSCP, and I own a pretty good Desktop setup and a work laptop. I want some opinions on what the best setup is for me.
Keep your PC operating system as is and install VirtualBox of VMWare Player. Instead of installing Kali from ISO, download their Kali virtual machines which are pre-built. More on reddit.com

Hi everyone,
I downloaded the Kali Linux VMware 64-bit image from Offensive Security: https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-vm-vmware-virtualbox-image-download/
I was looking at the Kali download docs, which mention checking the validity of any image downloads by using the checksum process: https://www.kali.org/docs/introduction/download-official-kali-linux-images/
However, the docs look as if they all mention having .iso files to do this. It would seem to me that the offensive-security download has no .iso file, as it just has VMware files. So, how can I check the validity of this image?

The problem is that there is no password set for root yet. Press ctrl+alt+f2 or whatever to switch to a console. You will already be logged in. Type “passwd” without quotes and hit enter. It will ask for a password.
