Kawai ES110 vs ES120 | Digital Piano Comparison & Demo
April 5, 2023 - While the ES110 also had tone ports, there weren’t really serving a true sonic purpose as the ES110 would start to sound overly treble heavy and sharp when the volume was pushing.

r/DigitalPiano on Reddit: Kauai es-110 vs es-120
October 21, 2023 -

I am wanting to upgrade to a better digital piano. The es-110 and es-120 both seem like incredible options. I currently have a Donner DEP-20 and while it is good for the price, the actions feels cluncky and not very responsive. I am wondering which piano would be a better option. I also have a triple pedal stand for the Donner and am curious as to if it would work with the es-110 or es-120.

The ES120 is the new ES110,if the price difference isn't huge I'd definitely go with that. Afaik they've done some important upgrades, mainly they quieted down the action by a lot and the keybed feels much more solid (at least that's what Merriam pianos said in their comparison video,I never played an ES110 so I can't compare on the keybed side, but I can say the action isn't loud). I have an ES120 and I really like it, expecially if you plan tò use VSTs it doesn't have the old midi pins but an USB-B connection (you only need a cheap cable),I've heard the ES110's velocity output caps at something around 100,while I can confirm the ES120 can reach 120 (you can probably reach around 125-127 by smashing the keyboard but it's not worth it,I'd highly prefer tweaking the curve a little bit). I upgraded from a p45 and the difference is huge,it sounds much better (I never used internal sounds on the p45,now without thinking about it I realized I really enjoy playing the ES120 even without a VST) and it's much more responsive/dynamic. Another reason why I'd go for the ES120 over the ES110 is the Kawai app support,I find it very useful if I want to mess with the sound (honestly I wouldn't even try changing parameters without a screen...),I know the app has a very bad rating on the Play Store but it works really well for me...I guess it got better with newer pianos? Idk tbh. Cons about the ES120: for some reason,Kawai lags behind Roland in connectivity (pretty much on the whole portable line),it doesn't have audio over USB,and it doesn't have an audio IN connection . If you want to record the built in sound you'll need an interface, and if you want to play a VST through its speakers you can't. It's not a dealbraker to me,considering It already sounds nice through the speakers so it doesn't need it but everybody has his own needs. After trying out the Roland FP30-X again and again I confirmed I just can't stand the action,it feels heavy and slow,so I went with the Kawai and no regrets so far,BUT ACTION FEEL IS SUBJECTIVE (even thought it's a fact that it's slow and tiring),TRY THEM IF YOU CAN, Kawai's action is bouncy so some people may not like it for example. About the action: while I like it, the black keys don't feel that sturdy...it feels like you have to be careful about lateral hits, theorically they made it more solid on the ES120 so it may only be a feel but you know...better be careful. And it started making some plasticky noise pretty soon,it doesn't impact the feel but saying it is fair. Sadly I'm pretty sure your stand+pedals unit won't work on the ES120. ⚠️About the pedals: when I bought the pedal unit I was torna between the pedal bar (it's on the wooden stand) and the gfp3,for some reason they don't state it has optical sensors on the pedal bar product page so Idk if it has a continuous output or just a ON/HALF/OFF output,I went with the gfp3 because it had 3 continuous pedals. Well...apparently it's limited via software so while the ES120 does support the gfp3,the only continuous pedal is the sustain pedal! Hope it helps, all in all I'm very happy with it so I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it as well (try it on person if you can tho,you may hate what I love or love what I hate in terms of action!). The es110 is an amazing keyboard. I own 2 of them in two different locations. It came with an amazing damper pedal. Grand piano sounds great split bass. The organ sounds are close to a b3. I think you can still purchase one on Amazon for around $700.00. Feels like a real piano under my fingers. The Es120 I’ve never played but it supposed to be a huge upgrade. What I read is it comes with a cheap damper pedal. I did purchase the es510 which is a pretty awesome keyboard good feel under my fingers. However the organ sounds suck. I called Kawai up. They told me the same organ chip is in the es 120. I love Kawai but in my mind they have cheapened some things. They all play really well. They should have never changed the organ sounds. They were right the first time. Find a used es110 if you can’t find a new one.

Is it worth waiting to buy the ES-120? - Piano World Piano & Digital Piano Forums
Hi! After a lot of searching for beginner pianos for a teen like me, I finally settled on the Kawai ES-110. Shortly after I made that decision, Kawai released the ES-120, which should come to the place I am buying from in August. My question is, should I wait for the ES-120 to releas...

r/piano on Reddit: A very specific Kawai ES110/120 digital piano question.
January 25, 2021 -

So the Kawai ES120 launched a few months ago and slowly there are more reviews coming online.

My question - Does anyone else think the ES120 sounds way worse and more artificial than the 5 year old ES110? Is it just my ears ?! I would have thought Kawai would use exactly the same samples but just add a few more new piano options to the ES120 but it seems they’ve completely changed the new piano samples and they’re all really really bright almost artificial sounding. There are no music stores anywhere near where I live let alone having kawai in stock so I can’t test out the real thing for myself!

I just wrote a long response to this question after seeing it online, but couldn't send it without logging in and then when I logged in, my text was deleted. So frustrating! I've got a Kawai ES 120 on order. Will let you know my opinion of the samples when it comes. I'm not sure that you can trust Soundcloud online samples as a definitive guide, but I realise it's awkward when you don't have a local stockist. I'm buying without seeing. Rather risky. I bought an ES 8 and an ES 520 without trying them out. Big mistake! I hated the ES 8 action and sold the ES 8 for half the price I paid after procrastinating for a year. The sounds were ravishing though. Such high quality samples! As for the ES 520, I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. I'm on my third ES 110 and love them, but would be happy if the piano samples were improved as I understand they will be on the ES 120, as long as the 120 doesn't end up sounding like a newer Roland. I graduated from an ES 100 to an ES 110 and felt/heard the difference. I'm hoping that the upgrade from ES 110 to ES 120 will be as good, if not better. Of course, I'm sure you know that the excellent F-10H pedal isn't supplied with the ES 120. I've just bought one on eBay secondhand for £28, but new, they are around £50-£60. I think it was mean of Kawai to supply only a switching device of the type that you generally get with cheap keyboards. One could buy a generic pedal but I wasn't sure if a 'cheapie' would have the half-damping facility of the Kawai F-10H so I decided to play safe. I recently had to buy a new power cable for an ES 110 and bought a unbranded one for £15 after finding that a Kawai original part would have been around £70. Good luck with your research. Hopefully, you may discover that the ES 120 is just the instrument for you!

Kawai ES120 review: The Evolution of the ES Series
May 15, 2025 - To summarize, the ES120’s design is an improvement over the ES110. Everything feels a bit more modern, and the overall feel is just more sturdy than the original. While I do have my complaints regarding the control scheme itself, it’s far from being a deal breaker. The ES120’s keybed uses Kawai’s Responsive Hammer Compact (RHC) action, which is the same hammer action mechanism used in the original ES110.

So, it's been nearly 3 1/2 years since the ES110 came out. So I think it's time to compile a list of wanted improvements. The thing that makes the ES110 unique in my limited experience is that the keybed is so outstanding in a 26 pound board that it warrants spinning it off into other mo...

Kawai ES120 review: Best no-nonsense stage piano
Pianist James Michael Nugent reviews the Kawai ES120 and compares it to the Roland FP-30X, Yamaha P-125, Kurzweil SP1, and older ES110. I love the sound of Kawai digital pianos, and if you can get that for a decent price, it’s always worth considering. The ES120 is a fantastic, lightweight, and value-for-money stage piano that sounds and feels great. It’s better than the older ES110, not by as much as I’d like, but it’s better than something already excellent.

r/piano on Reddit: How does the action on the Kawai ES120 compare to the FP-30x?
February 8, 2024 -

I currently own a Casio PX-S3000, and I'm looking to make a change. I had an FP-30, sold it after I quit playing for a bit and bought the Casio. The action on the Casio is starting to drive me a little nuts. It just feels too light, especially when I go to my teacher's house and try to play on an acoustic.

I'm sort of in between an FP-30x (maybe even RD-88... I'm a sucker for knobs and screens) and the Kawai ES120. I'd just grab a new Roland but worry that maybe the action is too heavy compared to my Casio.

I'm less worried about sound quality since I will most likely be using speakers and headphones. Also not too worried about additional sounds since my plan is to get some sort of piano software.

If anyone has tried out both and has some input, it would be appreciated.
