hello, I'm looking to build my own keyboard, but I cant figure out how to find any full size boards or shells or whatever.
I'm basically looking for a mechanical keyboard without the switches or keycaps.
I'm decent with a soldering iron so that is a option.
Thank you for your responses

r/MechanicalKeyboards on Reddit: What are the different styles of keyboard decks or frames?

To clear any confusion, I'm aware of the different layouts of switches (Full-size, TKL, 60%, etc.). I'm curious about the deck under the keys, if that makes any sense. For example, on this keyboard the keys and switches seem to be in their own little sections under the "surface" of the keyboard. But on this board and this board, the keys and switches look like they're mounted on what looks like a single sheet of material. If you look at it from the side, you can see pretty much the entire top half of the switches where on the other one, all the switches are in a recessed section.

Forgive the complex explanation of my question. I tried to show examples, but I'm not very proficient in keyboard anatomy. I just want to know if there are any standard names or terms for the two styles of aesthetic surfaces or decks or whatever they are that I compared in the pictures above.

Find elsewhere

Hey guys, Iโ€™m looking for a keyboard that I can buy that looks like the photo attached.

Basically:

  • keycaps not too close to the edge. Notice how the frame (white border) is not thin

  • 65-75%, has the arrows (doesnt have to be laid out exactly in that position, for example it could be sitting directly next to another key)

  • white / black

  • under $100 if its just the frame and under $160 if its an entire keyboard

Hi, noob here. Just want to try "building" a keyboard but actually I'm just going to buy the keycaps, switches, and frame separately. I won't do mods yet. Need help finding a frame. I was going to buy the Feker IK75 Pro (3-mode) but it sold out in my area and apparently it will not restock anymore.

Here are my preferences:

  1. Knob

  2. 75 or TKL

  3. Programmable RGB and keys

  4. Good stock stabs

  5. Adjustable tilt

  6. Reputable / decent quality control

  7. Black

  8. 3-mode is a great plus

  9. OLED is a plus

January 28, 2021 - The aluminum rails feel cool to the touch and make the keyboard feel somewhat more sturdy. Its unnecessary but I'm glad I got the aluminum version as it makes the keyboard feel like its not just a hunk of plastic.

Hey Reddit!

I was wondering if there were any decent 3D models or technical drawings for a 60% keyboard frame? I am curious about designing my own 60% keyboard with my CNC but not sure where to begin with the frame specifics or anything about building custom keyboards in general. I've never seen a 60% keyboard in person, but I am looking for a smaller keyboard. I currently have a Das Keyboard 4 with MX Blues and love it! I am just curious about possibly building my own keyboard and figured you guys could help!

I was about to order a K8, but it looks like the RGB version with the aluminum frame and hot swappable switches recently went out of stock. So ... I was thinking of downgrading to the white backlight.

My question is: Does the Aluminum frame have a big affect on the keyboard? Does it make the keyboard more stiff, or sound different?

This to me is a loaded question because the rabbit hole...... ----> I have the aluminum RGB and whatever. It is all good, but I could have gone with what you are describing. If you absolutely need to have all the bells an whistles. By all means wait , but keychron K8 in hotswappable , modifiable is a good keyboard. As long as you get the modifiable one. It also all depends on how much money you have to do your mods. I have the aluminum, but I have taken the time to take my ALUMINUM K8 apart and mod it with stuff I have laying around the house. ( easy peasy just check online ) and just mod it. I added 'filling', foam, new springs, new caps, lubed, etc... I now think, it doesn't matter which you go with as long as you are willing to put in the WORK, TIME, MONEY to get the keyboard 'sounding' or 'feeling' the way you want to. LOOKING is a different story. Some ppl just need backlight ( white light ) Some ppl need RGB ( ghetto flexing on 32 inch rims ) At the end of the day what do you want? I have my system murdered out. You can buy a Keychron keyboard already tweaked to someone else's liking OR You can slowly discover your typing preferences: Klakity Klak mutha fucka! ( Which noise level of your SWITCHES is appropriate for you?( ( key-cap composition, aluminum or plastic frame, keycaps will affect this(PBT, Metal, etc... )) How deep is your love mutha fucka! ( typing resistance of your springs. 10 grams or 150 grams resistance before you can BOTTOM out ) Spring back mutha fucka! ( how quickly your springs bounce back to fully extended ) Lubed up mutha fucka! ( Are your switches gritty? Do they need lube before going all in? ) etc mutha fucka! ( check youtube for more info about ALL the possibilites ) Just trying to keep it comedic since there are so many different aspects to tweak a keyboard to YOUR liking. The further you are to WOOD, METAL, the more difficult it will be to get your keyboard "sounding" like you want. If you are only interested in "feel", then do not worry about which you get. You can mod the 'feel', witch switches, lube, springs and keycaps material. If you are worried about "sound", then aluminum all the way. Makes it easier. Like I stated above. I have a keychron k8 aluminum. It was simplistic for me to mod it the way I wanted to. Much foam from the packaging itself. Diff springs ( I like heavy ). Lube! Key caps!

I prefer the aluminum just for the weight. I have a K6 and a K12 in aluminum and if remove the frame, it feels super off to me.

January 24, 2017 - It still fits a TKL frame though, with: 8 mm padding on the sides ยท 5 mm padding between panes ยท MX switches are 14 mm x 14 mm ยท MX switches have a 5 mm space between them ยท With those values, the keyboard would be 353 mm x 125 mm. For comparison, my CODE keyboard is 363 mm x 142 mm.

r/keyboards on Reddit: Keyboard Base Recommendations?
July 6, 2023 -

Hello, I'm looking to build my first custom keyboard and I need some help. I ordered Sarokeys Strawberry Wine switches and key caps from Osume, but when looking at bases, I'm completely lost. I want something available in white/off-white, preferably in a 60-65% range. I'd prefer to spend less than $120. I was looking at the Molly60 but the GB that I'm seeing wouldn't ship for about 3 months and I'd hopefully find something that could ship sooner.

Does anyone have any recommendations for this?

Hey, I've been looking around here for two weeks now and I wonder if there are any compact keyboards which would fit the "frameless" category with floating keys. So far, the only one I've seen is the Smart 68 which seems to have no frame at all, just a base.

Close to that there are the Vortex Pure Pro, Poker II, Pok3r, and the KBParadise V60 (I'd prefer 67/68 keys but it's not as important).

I want to see just some awesome custom keycaps without these mundane black or white frames if you know what I mean.
