I funded the Keychron K2 keyboard back in the day, I was pretty excited for a board that had built in bluetooth and a condensed layout, even if it didn't use QMK for programming (though I still held out hope that it would one day...)
I've been using the board as my daily since my normal daily board was locked in my company office during lockdown. Things have generally been good, but the keycaps had picked up some grime in all these months, so I decided I would clean them. I did what most mechanical keyboard users would do: I took some tupperware, added some water, added a drop of soap to it, and dunked all my keycaps into it to sit for a while to loosen up the grime. Then I took a really soft toothbrush and scrubbed the grime off, only to find this:
They were ruined!
I reached out to support and I was told this:
HI,
I checked with the team, the keycaps were oiled on the surface, which is why the paint fell off after you washed it with soap.If you are interested, perhaps you can take a look our our K2 keycap set that will be back in stock in April, https://www.keychron.com/collections/keychron-keycap/products/keychron-k2-keycap-set-1
We also have K2 PBT keycaps in production.
Thanks
The wording is slightly unclear, but let me get this straight:
-
These keycaps are painted, which is of the lowest quality I have ever seen on ANY keyboard. Dell's free boards have better caps...
-
Either the company applied oil to them, or they are implying my fingers should have abstained from being oily which is absurd.
-
Because the keycaps are affected by oil, from me or them, they should never be cleaned, otherwise they will need replacement.
I knew these weren't the BEST keycaps in the world, I have far better on my other boards, but I didn't expect this.
The construction of these keycaps is absurd, and Keychron should feel bad. They obviously did not design their products for longevity, and this isn't getting into all of my other issues with the way their boards are constructed, and sold.
tl;dr; Keychron paints their keycaps, and never wants them cleaned otherwise the paint comes off. Super low quality, do not buy.
Hello guys, recently purchased the developer keycap set from keychron and set them up on my Q1. I have to say I am thoroughly disappointed with the way they feel. The stabilizer keys apart from the space bar all feel uncomfortable, provide so much resistance and the sound is almost completely gone. The stock keycaps feel and sound 10x better. The quality of the legends is so-so. I definitely wouldn't recommend it if you were thinking about purchasing them. Since this is my first time purchasing a different keycap set for the board, is all the experience with dye sub PBT like this? Or are these just poor quality.
I'm thinking of getting the Keychron K2 Wireless Mechanical Keyboard (Version 2 with PBT Keycaps) (RBG Aluminium frame). However, I've read reviews that the PBT keycaps are not great quality and are a bit blurry.
Can anyone say anything about this? Have the newer PBT keyboards got better PBT keycaps?
Cheers!
Legends are quite blurry and bad quality key caps. Youโre better off just getting the Abs and buying a pbt key cap set compatible with the k2.
My new K2 V2 arrived a few days ago. The legends are not so much blurry as unevenly lit by the LEDs, which is disappointing. So on Del for example the 'D' is not lit. Pics on FB Keychron group.
Hi, excuse my ignorance but I'm looking to get my first mechanical keyboard. I saw a Keychron Q9 and V5 on display and really loved the feel of the Q9 (with Gateron Pro Blue switches), but can't afford a Q series keyboard.
I was thinking of getting a V5 backbone with Gateron Pro Blue switches, or a K8 Pro, but someone told me that you can't really buy keycaps that are compatible with Keychron keyboards, as the keys are of a specific size not commonly found in keyboards.
Is this true? I wanted a keyboard that I can switch the switches and keycaps, but is a Keychron not suitable for this? I just wanted to be able to buy pudding keycaps, from say, etsy, but maybe the Keychron isn't the best choice for them?
Hello, I have just bought Keychron K6, the online shop where I bought it offers other keycaps made by Keychron. I have heard that the stock keycaps which come with the keyboard are not that good (thin plastic and easy to leave fingerprints/finger oil). What about those replacement keycaps made by Keychron? Are they any better? I don't know if I can post the link to the shop over here so you guys can see it?
Hello,
I had Q4 before and I quite liked the keycaps on it. After that I got Q1 Pro as it has BT. But the KSA keycaps are trash for me. I don't like them.
Currenty I am looking at OEM Dye-Sub PBT Full Set Keycap Set - Developer.
But maybe there are better alternatives, not even from Keychron. As these cost 50e + Shipping.
Keycap Profiles
I've seen conflicting opinions about how good Keychron's PBT keycap sets are, but they are all pretty old so I don't know if they're any better now. What's the current vibe around these caps? (For reference, I'm looking at these: https://www.keychron.com/collections/all-keycaps/products/cherry-profile-double-shot-pbt-full-set-keycaps-camel)
I've seen the shipping price isn't too bad to get them to me in the UK and they're cheaper than buying a set from a local store (not to mention those sets do NOT have all the caps I need. Buying from Keychron ensures that the odd layout of the K4 will have every key accounted for)
Any feedback appreicated
I've gone through maybe 3 different sets of 3rd party keycaps for my Keychron Q3 key board, and I still have not found anything that feels as good as the stock keycaps that come with the keyboard from Keychron. Anytime I try different keycaps they just don't feel as premium or as nice. From the texture, to to the form factor, to the sound.... Any time I try other keycaps, I always go back to the stock ones.
I'm certainly not an expert, but I've tried to do my best researching the materials, ABS vs PBT, all the different key cap profiles and shapes, etc... I've tried to purchase keycaps that match the specs of the standard keychron caps, and still... I'm left disappointed. IDK if its all in my head or if anyone else knows what i'm talking about, but can anyone recommend keycaps that have exactly the same materials and feel to stock keychron keycaps? Because I always wind up going back to the stock keycaps no matter what style I buy 3rd party.
I'd love to find some keycaps that feel exactly like the stock ones but just have transparent or at least translucent key legends for the RGB.
I promise I'm not a total newb, but I guess this is one area where I'm lacking experience and knowledge, and am left confused despite having done a decent amount of due diligence when buying new keycaps.
Hi o/
I hope everyone is good.
So i just got a K8, tkl with red switches, last week and i really like it. I was interested in looking for some keycaps just cause, maybe some black alphanumeric, and was wondering where you guys get your caps from. Or care to share any maintanence/upkeep tips. The only thing so far is going wireless/bluetooth, pairing to Windows is poopy doodoo.
Much thanks to any who say hi o/
I've recently purchased the K5 Max RGB and while the typing experience is fantastic on the new oil resistant keycaps, the backlight has been rendered useless. What I miss in those keycaps is the letter shine-through which is rather crucial during night time. Altough I managed to buy a keycap set from Keychron website which has shine-through, the design choice to have non-shine-through caps in K Max is baffling. I had to spend extra money for a compatible keycap set, so ultimately the price for a complete and functional experience was +/- 20 USD higher.
