Hey guys, I'm pretty new to buying keyboards and was thinking of buying a Keychron Q1 Barebones ISO and just wanted check a few things before biting the bullet! Here's what I'm buying:

Here's a few questions I had:
Is this all I need to be able to build it?
Are there any parts that I should switch out/upgrade (mostly thinking of better keycaps)?
Is it worth switching to ANSI for the wider variety of available keycaps?

Is this all I need to be able to build it? Yes Are there any parts that I should switch out/upgrade (mostly thinking of better keycaps)? Have you checked that you want those switches? It may be worth getting a switch tester . It's quite hard to tell what switch is for you without trying them out for a while but a switch tester is a good start and spending £15 now to get the right switches is possibly better than spending ~£45 on switches only to want to replace them in the future with something different. Regarding keycaps, what do you mean 'better keycaps'? The keycaps are probably that price (and good value) because they're not unique colourways with novelties and are made en masse by Keychron. The keycaps that came with my K8 were ABS and shine through and they were fine, but I'm a child and I like shiny things so I got some colourful caps, but they're not necessarily better. Remember, too, that if you're buying ISO, compatible keycaps are rarer (especially if you want things like [2/"][£/3][@/'][|/][¬/`] - many cheaper/clone sets only come with the ISO enter key and 1.25u shift) and generally more expensive. Additionally, on the Q1, the function keys to the right of the keyboard are 1u wide, and finding a 1u ctrl key is going to be more challenging. There was a post about it on this sub the other day. I didn't like the grey/dark grey of the K8, but I personally love their blue set so, personally, I would be buying those. But regarding quality: while I'm not an expert, they're probably fine-to-good. Is it worth switching to ANSI for the wider variety of available keycaps? This is a really personal question. I recently bought the Tai-Hao Hawaii set for about £40 and I'm really happy with them and I doubt I'll be buying another set (besides, my wife would fucking kill me if she knew I spent £40 on colourful plastic haha). When I was looking to replace my K8 keys, I really wanted to buy clones of the Melgeek 'this is plastic' set - I absolutely love them - but I could not find a clone set with ISO format. You'll find this with a lot of clones and more 'affordable' keycaps. So if you'd have asked me a month ago 'do you wish you'd gone for ANSI?' then I would have said yes. Now that I have a keycap set that I really like that is 100% compatible with my board, my answer is 'nah'. I think if you plan on buying lots of different sets and switching them out, then I'd probably go for ANSI. It's much more common and generally cheaper. But if you find a set that you like and you don't plan on switching out, then stick with ISO. I use about 4 different computers (between work and personal) and I think it'd be annoying having to switch back and forth between ISO and ANSI.

I got the exact same keyboard recently and the only thing I wanted to change was the space bar stabaliser. Mine was a bit meh. But changing it with a durock II was a vast improvement. I found the stabalisers that came with it for the return and backspace keys were really nice and sounded/felt the same as the durocks so switching those out was not needed but the space bar, 100% needed. I did also modify the case a little, I opened it up and put masking tape between the upper and lower shell to reduce reverberations, this made the keyboard sound much better and I also put masking tape on the back of the PCB. Both of these mods cost me less than £1.50 to perform and made a huge difference in the sound profile making it sound much better. The keyboard does come with silicon dampeners already installed between the two halves of the case but they get squished down so hard they become completely ineffective, partly due to them sitting in grooves that allow them to be compressed out of the channel where the case halves touch. Overall 10/10 keyboard you'll love it I'm sure :)
