I'm writing this post because I've spent the last couple weeks buying keyboards and returning them due to various issues and compatibility things. I'm relatively new to the keyboard game so I wanted to preface my post by saying that this is coming from a noob, so don't shit on my lack of experience please.
0. Apple Magic Keyboard - This is the keyboard I originally had. I had this for many years through work and didn't really have a problem with it until it just up and died one day. I was considering getting another one but finally decided I might have a better time with a mechanical keyboard. So I decided to get myself one for christmas.
Yunzii B75 pro with milk- this was my first mechanical keyboard purchase and I was honestly really happy when I bought it. The typing experience and sound as great! I loved the manual volume knob and the design. And the Milk switches sounded great and felt great. Unfortunately, it started giving me charging issues and started to glitch when I installed the Yunzii software. The keyboard glitched more and more till it was basically unusable. The keyboard would go to sleep after 2 minutes without fail and in order to get it working again I had to plug it in USB and then unplug it. Customer support was very kind and offered me a replacement and a refund. I was very frustrated at this point and just took the refund. I decided I didn't want to deal with the new and unknown so I decided to buy a brand that I knew was tried and tested with my mouse.
Logitech G Pro X with tactile- Right off the bat, I was massively disappointed with the way the keyboard felt. I got the tactile switches (browns) but they were much much stiffer than expected. Literally felt like I was pushing really hard downward with every letter. Although the keyboard functioned well and it was easy to program, my fingers felt tired pressing down on this stiff board even for a few minutes. After using the Yunzii B75 pro with the milk switches, I knew that I was getting a subpar typing experience.
Happy Hacking Keyboard (HHKB) with Topre - I took a huge gamble and bought the HHKB. I thought, if I'm going to get a keyboard and its been tough to find a good one after going through two of them, I might as well get the best. Although the format of the keyboard seemed weird, I watched a lot of reviews and read a lot about it and finally pulled the trigger. When it arrived, I was ecstatic. I couldn't stop typing with it. It felt incredible compared to the logitech keyboard and even felt better than the Yunzii. Unfortunately, the format just did not work for me. I tried really hard to adapt to it, almost a month, but i just couldn't. Being a video editor and gamer, the format was just a massive pain. Also the bluetooth was much slower than expected and there were occasional bouts where it took 1-2 seconds for the keys to register. For a long time, I tried to convince myself that I liked it but ended up pulling the plug after a particularly frustrating video editing session. I think this board could be great for some typers but it just wasn't for me. Luckily I was still in the return window for Amazon.
Keychron Q3 Max with Gateron Brown- I was honestly stressed as hell when I opened this package. I'd spent a lot of money over the past couple weeks and if this board didn't work out, I had it in my head that I'd go back and buy a fucking apple magic keyboard. But I didn't have to. The instant my fingers pressed the keys, I knew I made the right choice. It was everything I liked about the HHKB but felt even better imho. The keycaps were curved so well to my fingers and the gateron browns were exactly what I was looking for. I know I sound dramatic but this board has really made my stupid little indulgent journey feel worth it. Everything about it feels so good. When I went to bed last night, my girlfriend asked me why I was smiling so much. I didn't even realize I was smiling, I was just thinking about the next day of typing on this keyboard. I've been enjoying typing so much that my speed has drastically increased. On typeracer, they just asked me to verify that I'm not cheating because I went over 100wpm.
I've seen some keychron bashing in this subreddit and I honestly don't know enough to defend it to people who know a lot about mechanical keyboards. But as an average consumer just looking for a great board to have a pleasurable typing experience and not have to deal with any glitchy software bullshit, I'm so happy to have found this board. It just works so well and feels so pleasurable to use. That's all I ever wanted.
Edit: Im not sponsored, I bought these products and returned them.
Edit2: just wanted to say that I’ve switched the switches to gateron sea salt smoothie and my typing experience has upgraded 10x. It’s actually amazing. I tried a couple other popular switches but nothing compares to the smooth typing feel of the sea salt smoothies.
