I switched out my Keychron k8 for the Q3 Pro with Banana switches and here are some good and some bad things.
It's really heavy and built like a tank. Dropping this will take a chunk out of the floor.
I have serious issues with wobbly knobs. I was worried after looking at a close-up video on their homepage of the knob turning that it wobbles but this feels ok, 8/10. edit: I didn't know before that you could press the knob but can definitely say that it's a satisfying click
The sound of this thing is amazing compared to my K8, It's in a completely different league! My K8 was foam modded for better sound but still not even close.
I used Glorious Panda switches on my K8 which are also very wobbly compared to these banana switches that feels very stable in comparison when resting my fingers on top.
I was also worried that the Banana switches would be to light compared to the Pandas but initial impression is that they will work just fine and I think I can rest my fingers on top without a problem. If not I will order their Mint switches and I do have some "Box Jades" from Aliexpress on the way to try out also.
So some negatives.
The Macro keys. Why did they use low profile switches? And follow up question, WHY DID THEY NOT INCLUDE LOW PROFILE BANANA SWITCHES TO MATCH THE REST OF THE BOARD??? The low profile switches they include are brown (gateron?) and the button is really wobbly when touching the keycap. They sound and feel awful.
Have any of you switched out your macro key switches for something else? Any recomendations? How stable are Keychrons low profile bananas?
The macro keycap size is not any keycap standard which is pretty stupid and I really hope they (or someone else) will make some custom double shot PBT ones that feel better. (I use SteelSeries Prism PBT Double-shot Pudding for the rest of the board)
The led light on the macro keys are shining out through the bottom gaps on all four macro keys straight into my eyes which is kind of annoying. I will make some mod to block the light or order switches that arent clear plastic.
Not only related the q3 Pro but it's about how lazy Keychron have been on the software front. Why have they not released their own software yet? I thought I would be able to change the led light on individual keys on my Q3 Pro but right now it appears I would have to mod the firmware myself outside of their 3rd party VIA solution.
On the Q3 Pro ISO homepage under the title "South-Facing RGB" it reads
"Comes with 22 types of RGB backlight settings. You can further fine-tune the RGB hue, saturation, brightness, effect speed, and different modes, or even remap these keys with QMK/VIA."
The line "or even remap these keys with QMK/VIA" makes you think you can make different colors but nope.
I can also not get the RGB lock command FN+L+Light button to work. It's always frustrating having to cycle through all the programs when accidentally hitting the light key as I have always just used solid red. Maybe there is some workaround in VIA but I haven't gotten that far yet.
FIX: For locking the RGB light to a solid color I have remapped the button so I have to press the FN button before pressing the light button to activate it. Basically putting the light toggle on layer 3 instead of 2 (layer 2 and 3 are the two windows layers).
All in all I would say that I'm very happy with the feel of the keyboard and I think most of these things can be fixed.
The only difference I can find is that the Q3 Pro is either wireless or wired while the Q3 is wired only.
Are there any other differences?
I dislike having a battery in my keyboard, as it will probably be somewhat deadish after a year or two and it has the possibility to become a spicy pillow.
