I am considering getting my first mechanical keyboard. I would like to use it at work, but it is highly unlikely that our IT department will approve QMK, VIA or anything similar. What should I expect in terms of limitations/problems if I just plug in the keyboard and start using it? If it matters, I'm considering the Keychron V6.

No software at all is required. None. You can program it wherever you want — it’s saved to the keyboard’s memory. And FYI, you can program it with any chromium-based browser. No other software installations required.

Paid 214 dollar for a keyboard only to realise that the software hardly works. Don't get me wrong the keyboard is amazing itself but it's very weird a big brand like keychron has NO software at all and the software that's available (VIA) just does not work and is kind of meh. Hopefully there's some kind of third party solution to this.

I have a keychron Q3 pro with knob and whenever I open VIA (wheter its in the browser or the downloaded version) VIA does not detect my keyboard. Replugging it does not work. The only thing that seems to work is downloading a .json for this keyboard and uploading it every single time I want to change something. Also there is nothing to change the rgb of the keyboard and there is no such thing as profiles for certain games which is VERY VERY handy and important (at least for me). Now I have 4 lovely macro keys without purpose <3. Keychron I love you thus far but this 3rd party software solution is just shameful and not a good image. You can do a lot better. Or at least give users the possibility to make some kind of software.

The JSON file is temporary until the file is accepted in the relevant GitHub repo. After that point you won't have to upload it. I actually really enjoy VIA for remapping shortcuts and a few macros, and for split work and home use it's nice not having to rely on software being installed. While I can see the per game profiles being useful, that functionality is a personal preference for each individual. I use my Q3 for games but don't rely on macros so for me it's a non-issue. Perhaps a gaming focused keyboard would be a good option for you and you can swap them as needed?

Isn't VIA already a third party solution? I don't think Keychron has their own software - at least thats what I always thought That doesn't help with the actual problem tho EDIT: I can't quite read, OP stated already that Keychron has no own software

What do you mean by "doesn't work"? What did you do exactly? What did you press? Did it present a file dialog (to select the download location)? Using what browser? What version? What happened (or didn't happen)? Some browsers don't present a file dialog (it may depend on the configuration of it), but instead puts the file in some default location. I could download the files when I tried it. For example, it could be some antivirus software on Windows blocking (or outright deleting) it. File 'Keychron Mouse-1.2.1.2.zip' contains an EXE file (Keychron Mouse-1.2.1.2.exe).
