If I could make a reccomendation: Get him a gift card, surprise him with it, and tell him he can go with you (or by himself) to pick them out. If he does want to go with you, perfect chance to naturally talk about the coming year if he wants to. Alternatively, if you're not in the same geographical area, give him the card with a note saying he can go with dad to pick them out or on his own. Style is really a personal thing, and my favorite way to receive shoes is with a gift card and an invite to go look with whoever gave it to me.
