Kinko's founder all shook up as FedEx drops the K-name - Los Angeles Times
July 16, 2019 - The dust bin of history is filled with once-revered retail names, including Marshall Field and Filene’s (both swallowed by Macy’s). And this year, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., which produces Panasonic products, said it would change its name to Panasonic Corp. in the fall, dropping Matsushita, the name of its founder. But Orfalea, who founded Kinko’s in 1970, said in a statement on Friday that FedEx’s decision ‘hit me hard.’

Kinko's was great before it got a board of directors in the mid-90s. My dad was a manager and my mom an employee, and they had a great time there. I spent much of my childhood playing with customers and employees at their Kinko's store, and I have pleasant memories of going on Kinko's vacations (they used to have some pretty massive, wild "picnics" for all Kinko's managers—to places like Disney World and Hawaii). Alas, it is that way no longer; it's not so employee- and customer-oriented now, but more like your typical profit-centric corporation. Paul Orfalea ("Kinko", the guy who started it) is now banned from entering any FedEx Kinko's store, because he loses his temper when he sees what they've done with his baby. I don't hate Kinko's these days—it's really like any other major chain, with all the same bullshit—but it's depressing to see what it has become, so I go out of my way to avoid it.
