We're a small custom shop. We build all our cabinets, all our doors, do our own finishing. But it works for us to buy our solid maple 5/8' thick pre-finished dovetail drawers. There are so many drawers on a typical job of ours that just the finishing would be too much for us. They're pricy, for sure. We also sometimes make our own drawers from 5/8" pre-finished europly, with a simple rabbet & dado joint. They're really strong, & have a durable finish. I personally would have them over the dovetailed ones. The truth is that dovetailed drawers are an unnecessary expense. They were originally used because a full drawer with no mechanical slide would come apart if it were pulled on day after day. Today, we use strong, full-extension drawer slides that take all the load off of the actual drawer box, especially sine we now apply a drawer front to the drawer box, attached only by 4 screws. So the actual dovetail adds extra strength where none is needed. The whole thing is kinda stupid, imo. Answer from killer_amoeba on reddit.com
