Kitchen Cabinet Trends to Avoid (and What to Do Instead)
October 7, 2025 - Shiplap everywhere, mason jar lighting, and heavily distressed cabinets created kitchens that looked more like themed restaurants than personal spaces. This trend aged quickly because it was so specific and recognizable. What felt fresh and charming five years ago now looks dated and try-hard. The heavily themed approach also limits flexibility for future updates and changes in personal taste, a no-no when you’re designing for longevity. The key to avoiding outdated cabinet trends is choosing elements you genuinely love rather than following what’s trending.
Suggestions to not build a dated Kitchen?
Think about what the kitchen will look like in your house and what you are drawn to. An ultramodern kitchen would have looked stupid in our house, so we picked more transitional finishes. If I posted, people here may say it’s already dated, but as long as you aren’t planning to move in the next couple years, you should pick finishes that YOU want to look at in the next few years. The next owner of the house will probably hate it and want to rip it out even if you somehow predict the future and pick finishes that are somehow in style now but won’t look dated in 10 years. What is a ‘timeless’ kitchen design in your opinion?
I sincerely, with my entire body, don't believe there's anything timeless. At all. But especially kitchens. More on reddit.com
What design trend is popular but will be outdated in 5-10 years? And people will think "wtf where they thinking?"
Double kitchen islands. Unless you have 20 kids and are a professional baker, it looks stupid. Barn doors. Open shelving in the kitchen. Chandeliers in the bathroom and closet - really? Wood floors in kitchens - incredibly difficult to maintain, especially if you have dogs, kids or if you are a totally klutz like me who spills everything. Huge bathrooms with enormous walk-in showers, which I understand are usually very cold, plus a tub. More on reddit.com

July 7, 2025 - I write this as I sit in my 1962 kitchen in all its pink wall oven, Formica counter, and original cabinet (painted a super-saturated green) glory. Which is where kitchen design is headed, according to the experts I chatted with. Here are three kitchen trends that designers say are finally fading, plus what’s taking their place.
