ARE TILES BETTER THAN MARBLE?
Yes and no. Natural stone marble offers one-of-a-kind design (no two are alike) that increases a property's resale value, but can be more easily damaged, requires regular maintenance, and is more expensive. Marble look porcelain tile is very durable, requires very little maintenance, and can go into areas that are not suitable for marble; however, it has little impact on resale value. We recommend professional installation for both (a good installer is worth their weight in gold!) but with marble slab, a professional fabricator and installer is a must. Thoughts on marble flooring in the Kitchen?
Be prepared to seal it at least once a year, and keep plenty of extra tiles for when someone inevitably drops something and cracks/chips/breaks/scratches them. Personally I hate marble and would never recommend it to anyone, for any room. It's typically very soft and requires high maintenance. I would prefer a good quality porcelain for the kitchen. But that's my opinion, and ultimately it's your house and you're the one that has to live with it. More on reddit.com

Perhaps a mix of real marble tile and marble look tile would offer the best of both worlds. Apply natural marble on countertops, floors and walls unlikely to sustain damage (such as a fireplace, feature wall, or residential entry way) and marble look tile in heavy traffic areas (like the kitchen, bathrooms, or outdoor patio).

r/Tile on Reddit: Thoughts on marble flooring in the Kitchen?
February 8, 2024 -

I just bought a 1920 fixer-upper house and am considering putting marble tile in the kitchen. Mostly because someone in my town has leftover and is selling it for $3/sqft, versus $28/sqft originally. The other floors are original hardwood, but there is only concrete under what was 1970s carpet in the kitchen.

My concerns are the aesthitic transition between the other rooms, and the durability of the marble. Many people say that it scratches easily and is porous, but people who have it say it's not a problem with a proper seal and good maintenence. The people who have marble seem to love it.

Might also be worth noting that the kitchen room is also an entryway, and I am afraid of scratching it with dirty shoes or a slippery surface upon entry. I assume that could be solved with rugs though. Any thoughts?

Well… the real question is: do you love cleaning floors? Marble for $3 a square is very cheap- but you can also buy many other materials for a similar price point that require less maintenance. I don’t like when clients want marble/dolomite materials on their walls or countertops and I straight up refuse to do work where they insist on marble floors. I’ll give them a contact for someone who will and most of the time get called back to replace it because they weren’t ready for the maintenance. Marble is the worst. It’s expensive to buy, annoying to cut, easy to damage, expensive to repair, and practically begs for bacterial growth in any open pores. That’s not even taking into account what quality of marble it is. Marble quality varies and can create more problems than what I listed above- if you ONLY deal with the problems I listed above it’s a high-end marble. If you have kids or pets you’ll hate yourself later. Tell company to remove shoes or maybe just their feet and don’t drag ANYTHING over your floors. Marble is the girl from high school whose “career goals” consisted of finding a sugar daddy. Run. Run from that girl.
