r/Renovations on Reddit: What is your favorite type of kitchen sink?
October 31, 2023 -

We've been slowly remodeling our house for the past 8 months and now we're at the very last part. The kitchen sink! I just can't decide. I can't stand stainless steel. I was originally going for granite/quartz composite in white. I've heard great things, but I've always heard terrible things. I'm just at a loss. Can anyone help with what your favorite sink material is? This will be a drop-in sink, we have hard water. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

r/kitchenremodel on Reddit: Kitchen Sink - how do you choose??
June 8, 2025 -

With all the kitchen choices of layout, cabinets, countertops appliances, I didn’t realize I also have to choose a sink from a ton of options.

Is there a thought process, or an in fashion style? Is bigger better or small and sleek? Do people like the sinks with the two sections? (My current sink is one very large one that isn’t divided.)

I’ll be shopping around this weekend to figure it out and would really appreciate any success stories, or any regrets that might help me learn well on this choice.

There are some definite trends in sinks but this is a workhorse item and you should know that some of these trends are not really functional. Some sinks are very crisply rectangular. It looks very sleek, but the sharply creased corners are miserable to clean. You want at least a little bit of curve there. Black sinks exist for those who want to ride the black trend, but they show hard water deposits like nobody's business. I recently stayed in a vacation rental with a black sink and it always looked grimy. Fireclay sinks can break if you drop a pot in them. If you want a white sink, get cast iron instead, it comes in basically the same styles. Some function-driven trends: Single basins are more popular. Double sinks used to be popular when dishwashers were uncommon because you can soak your plates in one basin and rinse in the other. Now that most kitchens have dishwashers (and you should almost never design a kitchen that doesn't have one, it's a negative ROI choice) it's mostly the large items that get hand washed, and it's easier to wash large things in one large basin than two small ones. As far as I know, the one setting in which double sinks are still the preferred choice is a kosher kitchen. Sinks have gotten deeper in the last 15 years. You can fit more stuff in a deeper sink and it's easier to wash larger pots. They're not the optimal choice for tall people (more bending- back pain) or large-busted short people (those vast tracts of land get irrigated) or when designing for a seated user such as someone with a wheelchair.

It doesn’t matter what other people like. It matters what you like and what works best for you and the way you use your kitchen. Some people like stainless steel, I like enamelled cast iron. If you under Mount the sink, that makes it easier to clean the counters. I’d choose white or stainless.

How to Choose A Kitchen Sink
For instance, most drop-in kitchen sinks have a ½ inch lip, so a backsplash built onto the back edge of a laminate countertop can interfere with the lip overhang of a drop-in kitchen sink. A farmhouse kitchen sink requires a customized cabinet to accommodate the apron front panel, which will also change the sink’s placement along the countertop.

6 Best Kitchen Sink Styles: Finding the Right Fit for Your Home
September 18, 2025 - Originally designed for rural homes where heavy-duty kitchen work was the norm, today’s farmhouse sinks blend old-world appeal with contemporary convenience. You’ll love the extra-deep basin for washing oversized items, and the apron front eliminates awkward leaning over cabinet edges during cleanup. Single basin sinks maximize your washing space by dedicating the entire sink to one large basin. These kitchen sink styles excel at accommodating large pots and pans that simply won’t fit in divided sinks.
