7 Dated Kitchen Trends to Steer Clear of in 2026 (and 3 that'll always be in style)
October 24, 2025 - I have to draw a hard line on this one. Don’t do it. Gray-toned wood floors, wood-look tiles and laminates are probably my number one kitchen trend to avoid if I had to choose. There are no good use cases for it.

April 11, 2022 - So where might you want to avoid using brass in a kitchen? 'We then will use polished nickel or matte black for the more permanent fixtures, such as the kitchen sink faucet and pot filler,' Kendra explains. Try a more restrained take on an industrial style to make the trend work.

The style in which your house was built is usually what suits it best. How many people ruined a nice clean looking wall by painting it a "feature" colour with a sponge? All you need to do is keep your appliances up to date and your grout clean. Natural woods and clean looking stainless/chrome will never be outdated More on reddit.com

7 Kitchen Cabinet and Countertop Trends Designers Never Want to See Again | The Kitchn
1 month ago - The thing about kitchen cabinets and countertops is that trends seem to come and go so quickly. For instance, the all-white kitchen was all the rage just a few years ago, but now it’s one many interior designers are tired of seeing. “That clean, flat, minimal counter with no veining or movement feels a bit sterile now,” Brad Thornton, founder of Thornton Projects, says.

While these are perfectly fine for bedrooms, living rooms, or even dining rooms, you should avoid installing them in your kitchens. Frosted or shaded lights give off a softer light, which in some rooms gives a calming effect, while in kitchens looks terribly dreary. Kitchens need as much bright light as they can get, natural or otherwise, to give them life. Bare bulbs would probably be your best choice, to give the room at the heart of your home the bright, lighthearted feel you want it to project. Tiled countertops: This trend actually started before the days of the internet.

August 10, 2022 - The other drawback is it can be a dust magnet, or attract airborne grease generated through cooking. Not all designers would agree it’s a kitchen trend to avoid but if the decorative aspect is important to you then consider glass-fronted cabinetry; otherwise, for a modern kitchen, closed cabinets prove a much better storage solution.

Outdated Kitchen Trends to Avoid: Modern Design Ideas for 2025
September 18, 2025 - Over the past few years, there has been a shift towards ultra-matte finishes for kitchen cabinets, reflecting a broader trend in home design. However, this finish has become an outdated kitchen trend to avoid in 2025. The ultra-matte surface tends to show every fingerprint and scuff, making maintenance more challenging, especially in homes with children or pets.

Answer (1 of 6): Personally I think the white (and even light grey) current kitchen cabinetry trend is mostly a good, safe bet long term. It’s hard to find fault with an investment that isn’t colored (excuse the pun) by stronger, trendier shades. So, that leaves pattern.

r/InteriorDesign on Reddit: What current design trends will go out of date first?
October 4, 2023 -

I am currently renovating one of my houses. When I bought it, it was standard 80’s house look. Yellow walls, dark brown cabinets, carpet everywhere, cheap laminate flooring in bathroom. I’ve since updated all the flooring and wall colors, but there is still a lot of work left, especially in the kitchen.

Updating all of these things made me think about how back in the 80’s how the house looked must have been considered “modern” of its times. But now, it looks old and dated. What we consider “modern” now are things like open concept floor layouts, stainless steel appliances, and white/bright color schemes as opposed to the mellow/dark colors seen in older houses.

With this all said, what current trends do you think will go out of the date in the next 20-30 years?

EDIT: as a follow up, what do you think will be the next trends? Here are my prediction: no more stainless steel appliances and instead be replaced with either hidden fridges to match cabinets, or fridges with glass covers similar to grocery stores. And will light up when you walk near it

Cheap hack-y imitations of high-end design trends will always age like milk. I get the impulse behind them, but it's just more crap that's going to wind up in a landfill in 5 years. If your goal is to "steal the look" without paying for the materials and labor that make that look work, then I'd think long and hard. There's a lot you can do on a shoestring budget (it's the only option I have too) without having to live with a crappy pastiche of something that's expensive for a reason. Well made things endure and adapt. Their cheap imitations don't. God is in the details. The most destructive thing social media has done for home design is flatten space into two dimensions. People will buy a sofa without ever sitting in it. Without ever feeling the fabric. Sure, that bookshelf looks fine styled with a few trendy tchotchkes, but what about when it's actually full of books? All that said, I'd rather just see people embrace things that excite them, trendy or not. Jewel toned kitchens will probably pass, but if my friend is trying to decide whether to paint their kitchen mauve or white, I will always be on team mauve. People today decorate like influencers. They design their homes for some imaginary other observing them through a camera. My grandfather was a carpenter. When he built the family home, my grandma insisted on a yellow kitchen. Yellow kitchens weren't the trend then, and they aren't the trend now, but her kitchen is still yellow. It still works, because you can see the care that went into it. It was never trendy, but it was the product of a man building his forever home with his own hands, and I could never imagine that house with anything else.

March 1, 2019 - White cabinets still work beautifully, but pure white on white on white minimalist kitchens can look cold and bland. Also, rows of too many moldings on cabinet doors, above them, between and under them, gather dust and can look too ornate. If you’re not sure what you are doing choose from the many simple styles available. People are finding it difficult to live with the fairly new trend of all upper cabinets being replaced by open shelving.
