Kohler 20 hp Won't Start - Please Help!! | Lawn Care Forum
Unscrew the valve cover, loosen the rocker nut, place the correct gouge in the gap and turn the adjustment screw till the gouge slips with limited resistance. Then tighten the rocker nut and put valve cover back on. Done. Use the search option (green bar) and find a thread with pictures or look for a service manual. If you don't feel comfortable doing it ask the shop guy to get it done, it won't cost much.

I turned the flywheel where the engine was not in the compression stroke an it started just fine.....hmmmm....what the problem was that the ACR ( Automatic Compression Relief ) cam was broken off and laying in the oil pan. Now this explains why it will not turn over....and Kohler has a new ACR design with the new parts you need to order.

Kohler 20 HP Engine Won’t Start After Low Oil Shutdown
I have a 20 hp Kohler engine with a single cylinder. When I attempt to start it, it turns over once and then stops, similar to how a car behaves when the timing is off. It was low on oil, but it seems to be fine without the plug. It turns over well.

Kohler Courage 20 Won't Start. Stumped. | Hobbyist Forums
Might make up a couple of jumper wires and connect the solenoid to the battery and establish that the plunger lifts then falls when disconnected. As far as troubleshooting you might get a can of either and once you know the shut off is functional, remove the air filter, give it about a good 2 second shot of ether in the carb throat then try to start. If it won't hit you've got spark problems.

As with all engines, you need spark, fuel and compression. If all three are present it will run, if any are missing it won't.

When you try to start the engine, does it turn over at normal speed, as if it is trying to start, or does it spin a lot faster or slower than you might expect? If it is a lot faster, you may have low compression. If it is a lot slower, your starter motor is probably suspect (assuming it has a starter motor and isn't a pull-start like smaller mower engines).

Assuming you have good compression and the engine is turning at a good speed, the next thing to check is the spark. Take one plug out and check its colour against a colour chart*- this can often tell you a lot about what is going on. At this point, it is usually wise to check the plug gaps - you'll need a feeler gauge and the mower's workshop manual for the correct values. If the plug looks good, connect the plug to its lead, and lay it on top the engine so the body of the plug is earthed, then try starting and watch the plug - you should see a spark. If you don't, or it looks weak, that is the problem. If you get a good spark, replace the plug, re-gap the others, and move on to fuel...

Unless it is gravity-fed, there will have to be some kind of fuel pump somewhere in the system. A quick way to test this is to get a can of "easy-start" or similar. Remove the air filter, and (working in a well ventilated area) spray the easy-start directly into the intake, then try to start the engine - if it coughs, then fuel supply is the likely problem. If you've checked the fuel filter, then it is either a failed pump or a blockage in the line. Disconnect the inlet to the pump, and pop the end of it into a can of fuel (being careful, petrol vapour is highly flammable!), then try to start - being in mind will take longer than normal to suck the fuel through. If that works, it is a blockage in the line (or the fuel in the tank is crap). If not, remove the pump and test it off the engine.

I'm not sure about you're particular model, but on my John Deere riding mower, the fuel pump is driven by vaccuum and the pickup is just above the oil sump. If there is too much oil in the pan it covers the pickup and it does not pump fuel.

A previous answer suggests that there is no fuel pump for your model, so a good place to start is to follow the steps in @Nick C answer, and if fuel is the issue, verify whether you have a fuel pump, or it's gravity fed. In any case the check for this problem is easy, just pull the dip stick, and if the oil level is correct, this isn't the problem. If it's high, you should drain some until its correct anyway. Excessive oil in a 4 stroke engine is a very bad idea as several posts in here have shown.

I hope that helps!

Kohler 20 hp starting problem | Yesterday's Tractors Forums
May 30, 2013 - I agree with Butch.I have adjusted a many of mowers that would not start due to the cable being just a little out of adjustment. ... Fixed the problem! Seems there is a fuel shutoff solenoid (correct nomenclature??) at base of carb. Removed it, sprayed it liberally with carb cleaner, jumpered it to the battery so I could operate it while holding it in my hand, then reinstalled it.

I have left the solenoid connected to the ignition switch to battery as 1) assume the dc current flow is resistive limited and doesn't "see" the missing pintel. and 2) if I leave the wire hanging/taped my poor memory will wonder "where does this wire go" the next time, if ever, I look closely at carburetor. ...
