Kohler Courage Single cylinder engines are called bucket engines for a reason. because when you're done tearing them apart to find the failure, you have a nice bucket for the parts. The issue is oil. The oil journals on those engines are undersized and vertical..and when you use old oil, contaminated oil or run them low on oil, the rod bearings quickly wear out because it can't pump the oil upward and you end up snapping either the crank or the connecting rod. They're a cool design over the Briggs singles because you can get to everything without removing the head...but I run from them anytime I see them because you never know how they were taken care of. All that aside, Kohler Magnums are great, as well as their Command series. And courage series vtwins are relatively safe also. I prefer Kohler over Briggs most of the time for twin cylinder/vtwin, and briggs over Kohler for single cylinder stuff. I flip riding mowers for a side hustle for the last 5 years. 2005 Kohler Courage DualCam Mower Recall and Repair Options
Oil leaks in the 2005 Kohler Courage DualCam 20hp often stem from loose bolts or damaged seals. The crankshaft break is severe, usually caused by metal fatigue or impact. Inspect all engine mounting screws and tighten them properly.

Kohler Courage engines | BobIsTheOilGuy
Is there anything special that I need to do to maintain the Kohler Courage engine in my lawn tractor besides regular oil changes, air filter and clean cooling vents? I have lost two B&S engines due to the valve and pushrod issues and that's why I switched to Kohler and intend to keep it longer. More on bobistheoilguy.com

Kohler Courage XT-6 Question | BobIsTheOilGuy
My Husqvarna has the XT-6 engine on it and it three years old. Up until now I haven't had any trouble from it. I run super unleaded from Shell, Stabil Marine, and a little MMO. Again no problems. This season, it seems to bog down a lot more and when it does it struggles to get back to idle and... More on bobistheoilguy.com

KOHLER Courage SV530, Are They Still Bad Engines? | Yesterday's Tractors Forums
January 24, 2014 - I was looking at an Ariens model 936064 with a 17hp 597cc KOHLER Courage SV530 engine. From reading on the net I have found they were a junk engine, liked to self destruct at very low hours, less then 50 in many cases. I see on the Kohler website they have retired all the SV engines now that end...

Anyone have problems with their Kohler Courage 20 SV600 engine blowing the oil drain plug cover off the side of the engine? | Lawn Care Forum
November 11, 2022 - The Kohler Courage engine was absolutely the worst engine ever made. It was an embarrassment to Kohler, who actually make great engines. Every now and again, even good company’s make mistakes. I strongly suggest trading in that machine, both because the engine is unreliable, and because a Cub Cadet LTX-1045 is a bottom of the line homeowner tractor mower, never intended for commercial use.

r/lawnmowers on Reddit: Why are Kohler Courage engines so bad?
April 17, 2024 -

I have a 21 hp single cylinder Kohler Courage. From what I can tell, the main issue with these is a cracked block which can be prevented. Are there any other issues that can be prevented? And how long could I expect it to last after lock titeing the cover bolts along with diligent maintenance? Thanks

Kohler Courage engines | BobIsTheOilGuy
June 2, 2017 - Sure, never start them up! Okay, all humor aside, my research shows that the single cylinders have a terrible reputation. The twin cylinders are okay. If you look at the Kohler websites on the Courage engines, they really brag them up. But remember one thing: Kohler discontinued them.

Kohler Courage Pro (SV735-0016) engine problems | My Tractor Forum
June 10, 2013 - Other than a gradual loss of engine rpm, I didn't hear any abnormal sounds coming from the engine. After pushing the tractor into my garage, I check the oil level which was normal but noticed it was very black (eg. the oil was only changed approx 3 hours ago with 2 quarts of 10-30W plus a new oil filter). Then I started a top down disassembly of the Kohler Courage Pro engine.

Kohler Courage XT-6 Question | BobIsTheOilGuy
June 11, 2014 - The XT-6 was a failed Kohler product for sure. Like others have said, the Auto Choke is junk. On the other hand the engines they are selling right now are very promising. My Courage SV590 (discontinued model) is an excellent little engine, nearly 300 hours now, which is a fair bit for a "cheap" consumer grade engine.
