Cummins Home Standby Generators vs. Kohler
Hello, I’ve been researching standby/whole home generators for the past few months. we live in NE Ohio. So winters for 1/3 of the year are a concern.
Quick rundown of my setup. 500g LP set up Septic has to run (primary sump as well living in a low spot where water does make its way into tank) 1 sump pump LP heat pump LP water heater LP Dryer Electric stove 240v Well pump 2 refrigerators/1 full freezer
Looked Into the standby option, which I’m fine with hooking up and maintaining . But I don’t work from home so I’d have to stop and refuel/switch circuits periodically to keep my house functional. The biggest concern I’ve seen is when it’s snowing outside, there’s major chances of electrocution starting a generator on snow. So that ruled out portables for our safety.
The 14kw Kohler will run the whole house. Just not AC on really hot days due to the constant running. (Okay with this, Bi Level with tons of windows and nearby trees) would probably look into a easy start for the AC. We were quoted for a $10,500 install with a cold weather kit
The 20kw would leave some space to add onto the house. I like the idea of not stressing out a generator running close to its peak wattage. And the 20kw 999cc motor seems to have a good reputation in the commercial community. Estimated 5k hours until engine replacement. We were quoted $11,500 for install.
I know it’s overkill, but I also looked into the 24kw system. Much bigger foot print, liquid cooled,1800rpm. chefs kiss but I haven’t gotten a official quote. Would this be worth it if the $/kw was close to the $570/kw like the other kohler generators? I’d hope to see the generator here for a long time with the higher up front cost. Dumb to look at it this way? These motors were run in forklift and run LP. Engines usually see 10k hours before needing replacement.
Thoughts? I know they change up models every few years, but any long term kohler/cummins input would be awesome. Since we live in Ne Ohio, we rarely see hot temperatures so a liquid cooled gen isn’t necessary to keep it running for multiple days. Our longest outrage was 4 days, and have had about 5 of them in a year.
Local kohler dealer apppears reputable and always has 2 guys working. Seems like a good start for service. Closest cummins dealer is a hour away.
