Designing with Ornamental Grasses - Harmony in the Garden
February 29, 2024 - I’ve always liked this well-known saying that helps sum up the differences between sedges, rushes and grasses: ‘Sedges have edges, rushes are round, grasses have knees that bend to the ground.’ · So let’s proceed! These are the grasses that grow between 6-12 inches tall. They’re ideal for tucking along the base of taller plants, nestled next to a rock or container, or even filling in between stepping stones.

Ideas for filling the space between rock and grass
How much space are you dealing with? If it was me I'd make it bigger, turn it into a flower bed, and plant things that will overlap and soften the rock face. That's a very cool feature and is a look that many people spend lots of money trying to attain. More on reddit.com

Need Ideas for Plants Around Rocks
Little red bushes could mean barberry, maybe? I'm in zone 6 and not as well-versed in plants for zone 9, but we do get blistering summers and I have a rock wall in full sun--it's planted with junipers, sedum, and sempervivum, along with some ornamental grasses and ninebarks...all very low maintenance There are tons of ornamental grasses that will perennialize (come back). I believe in zone 9 that could include purple fountain grass, even--the nursery tag should have cold hardiness info on it. More on reddit.com

Removed the grass and added a walkway and rocks. Suggestions on plants? Zone 9B in N.California
I, and everyone who owns that house after you, wish you had gone with wood chip mulch. Use gardenplanner.calscape.org to find native plants appropriate to your part of California. However, you're going to be heating up your landscape with all that rock, so you should probably instead choose Southern California plants. I'd go with three Pozo Blue or Winifred Gilman sages, two on the left and one on the right. More on reddit.com

What to do with grass coming through stones?
I honestly can't understand grass. Try getting it to grow on your lawn, it dies at random patches, it needs water all the time, it needs fertiliser all the time, basically you just dare giving it less attention than a newborn baby and it dies. Decide to rip up the grass and go anti-lawn: oh no you don't. Grass starts growing like mad. Comes out at every crack, tries to grow UP THE WALL, GROWS THROUGH TAR, grows through a hot lot of only pebbles, climbs up other plants you're trying to grow there, smothers the other plants, gets hip height where you've planted shrubs to starve it from sun. Seriously. More on reddit.com

Designing with Grasses - Fine Gardening
September 16, 2025 - Now they were planning a garden composed of informal beds within a formal design. Stymied, I decided to visit the old garden. Like an old friend I hadn’t seen in a while, it looked different to me. I realized that I had used grasses as hedges, along pathways, and as focal points and edgings.

r/landscaping on Reddit: Ideas for filling the space between rock and grass
February 11, 2025 -

It's difficult to mow the grass properly. Wheels bang into the rock. In the shallow places, the knifes almost cut into the rock.

I've dug out a distance from the rock now, this will allow for easier grass cutting as seen in the pictures. I need to fill the gap somehow.

I was thinking of bark mulch, but on the shallow rocky parts, the bark will get kicked of from kids running on it.

Pavers could also work, but again the shallow parts won't allow the edges of the pacers to stay level with either the sloped rock or the grass.

Could I fill this with concrete maybe? This sounds like a good idea, but I'm a bit hesitant to commit to it. Any ideas would be greatful.
